gas gage problem

    Hey everyone
    Ive got a gas gage problem when i turn on the key to my jeep cj5 1980 the pointer goes past the full mark and I only have about 2 gal in the tank is there a way to adjust pointer to show correct reading. I ohm the sending unit and at empty it reads 9 ohms and about 78 in the full position

    The red wire to the tank is touching ground somewhere.

    DO NOT keep running the Jeep with the gauge pegged high. You'll burn something out.

    DISCONNECT the sending wire from the tank. You will lose fuel AND temperature gauge readings. Find the ground and go on with life.

    I had the same problem. It was caused by a short in the stud on the top of the sending unit.
