Hi guys, I'll get out in front of it, I suck at wiring, trying to get better.

Brutar has had some shorting issues so I am running new wire. My plan is to add a simple fuse box later, but right now I want to get her fired back up cheap and fast.

What circuits and what amp fuses would you use for basic protection. I have a ton of the yellow, large guage fuse holders and fuses(we sell them at work), so I want to use those for now

Please remember, I suck at wiring, thanks

Fast, cheap or Good- You can Have Two but Not Three.

There's a lot of variables here that you'll need to be clear on- what do you consider the minimum required for your purposes? Running? Lights? Extra lights? 200 watt sound system?

If you just want it to run you need switched power to the coil and a momentary source to the starter solenoid

For basic protection with new wiring the stock setup with the 30A breaker on the light switch is fine. If you want ot add fuses then

1- Wiring should be sized to the load- headlights get bigger wire than tail lights.

2- Fuses should be sized to the wiring- 10A for 18 gauge wire 15A for 14gu wire, 20 for 12 gu.

If you're a novice at this I'd suggest starting off with a Painless or EZ wiring harness.

If painless is too pricey for you, look for a school bus in your local wrecking yard. Many times they have some nice universal style fuse holders with blade type ends. It would be much neater than a handful of inline fuses. I ran all my own wiring and wish now I'd done a painless setup, as it would've saved so much time.

You should be able to get a universal wiring kit from eBay for $115 most. That'll get you all of the lights you need and then a fuse block. And it's all done. Why do it half way one time only to have to revisit it down the road?

I wired my whole jeep from scratch myself. It's not hard to do if you understand what you want. A wiring diagram will help. If you get a new turn signal it comes with the diagram. The rest is just pulling wires and connecting switches. There aren't that many circuits. Just make sure you use wire rated for automotive use. Make sure the gauge is adequate, try and solder connections and use shrink wrap to make it last and look good. It's ok to screw up and redo it a bit. I have wired my jeeps more than once.... now I'm pretty ok at it:rofl:

Fed from the battery terminal on the starter solenoid:30A fuselink for key switch, 30A fuselink for the alternator, 30A circuit breaker for head/marker lights. Markers can be 15A fused off the headlight switch.

Fed from accessory terminal of keyswitch: 15A each for instruments and turn/stop indicators, 10 for the radio. 20A for heater fan

15A for hazard, fed from Bat terminal of key switch.

That's what I am looking for, thanks!! Thanks everyone, will do the fuse block from ebay above at some point. Just wanting to get her out there and somewhat protected. Found the source of the short. Where the main ignition wire that goes to the key passes through the firewall. It rubbed on the choke cable and that seems to have started the smoking. Man, she was running good
