Flywheel Bolts

    This may seem a bit trivial, but my question is really regarding lock washers. I am putting my flywheel back on (bolting to the crank output) and wondering if I should use lock washers? There were none when I took it off, but that doesn't really mean anything in terms of what it should be. I am guessing I can use a bit of loctite and torque them to the proper spec and it will all be good....but since I am a bit concerned about the quality of the bolt threads I intend to get new hardware - could probably run the old ones through a die and it would be fine - ran a tap through the engine/crank side. Any reason to (or not to) include lock washers when re-attaching?

    Along these lines - I've noticed that a lot of my jeep mounting bolts didn't have lock washers - such as the engine mount brackets to the block, bellhousing to block, pressure plate to flywheel etc. Of course my old CJ has probably been apart and back a number of times - so could have been a PO - or maybe Jeep just didn't use them in those days (or nobody really did). I have a tendency to add them especially if I am putting in new hardware and can account for any loss in thread depth.

    Internal tooth lock washers as well as medium loctite are both commonly used on flywheels and flexplates.

    I believe everyone above is correct...........some bolts under the head do well with a star washer and others don't..............personally I would buy some ARP flywheel bolts and follow there instructions.

    I've seen that argument put forth before & I don't buy into it- I've got lots of bolts with tooth marks on them let by supposedly squashed flat lock washers.

    Thanks guys- I decided to order a set and it looks like they come with external point lock washer - but sometimes pics are generic. What I took out looks to be a standard grade 8 hex bolt - no special head.

    Just a thought, I broke a flywheel bolt putting on a flywheel, it was original, could have been stretched already? I got it out with a left handed drill. I don't think it was a hardened bolt. I put all new bolts in without washers, there was no washers on them when I took it off. I slowly pulled each bolt to specs, and let it go at that. Still don't know if I done it right.

    Torque 'em, and then safety wire them.

    Just changed my clutch and resurfaced flywheel.. Bought new flywheel bolts and they had the washers, searched the web and seems most people install WITHOUT the washers. I left the washers out.
