I am looking to replace my 20 something year old steel wheels. I have a chance to pick up so 15x10 with -48mm off set. So if I understand this backspacing it would 3.1 inches from mounting to inside edge of rim and 6.9 inches from mounting surface to outside of rim. Best as I can tell with the rims on the CJ now is they are 7 inches wide and zero off set. My thought is just 31 or 32 inch tires. Though I am thinking about moving to 16 inch rims. Still I have no clue to what was stock back spacing was on my Jeep. Even though the 15x10 are priced well would 8 or 8.5 inch wide rims fit better?

I know some people have used larger than needed of rims or tires. That work but rub. I really don't need to push the envelope. Seems odd no one knows what offset or backspacing should I say of the rims they installed on their CJ's. No worries the stock ones listed recently 3 for 150 the owner was kind enough to measure for me.

Do you have the original steel wheels for a Ren I? They should be 7" wide and have around a 3.5" back spacing. I suspect you are not measuring back spacing correctly. Wheels with zero backspacing would stick out like a clown car or some low riders.

Post a picture of your wheels.

20170718_081301.jpg 20170718_081322.jpg IMO 10" wheels are too wide for an early CJ.
I run 15x8 aftermarket spoke wheels with (I think) 4" backspace, and 31" tires. They stick out just a bit and rub the inner rear fenders a bit when fully stuffed, neither of which is a concern for me.

Around 3.5" backspacing is typical for for these Jeeps. So that would be 0" offset on a 7" wide wheel. Nothing wrong with those dimensions - you can run many different tires on those wheels. I'm running 33x10.5-15 on a 7" wheel. Pretty sure Chuck/Warlock also is running those on his flatty, with 7" wheels.

Even the factory H78-15 Suburbanites would rub on the inner rear fender when severely stuffed. Not a problem.

10" wide wheels are too wide. If you want 31" tires you can get 31x10.5 tires and those should fit fine on stock wheels.
