I have my eye on 1947 Flat Fender that is for sale but I just can't see myself being comfortable driving it if it does not have some sort of roll over protection. It has collector plates on it now which means insurance drops from $1,000 a year to $250 as it is in show room condition. The rules say that I can add a roll bar as long as it is period correct. Period correct as they see it is plus or minus 2 years. I am no expert but I thought roll bars came out much later for jeeps. I would love for someone to prove me wrong...say an add in a magazine for a roll bar that would fit a 1949...or earlier.
    Thanks

Came out much later IIRC. But many CJ roll bars will fit.

I have one in the garage for my '5 that was made by Smittybilt in the 70s, it was on a 1943 MB before I bought it.

I don't think there was any reason to put one on before seat belts arrived in the early 60's. I don't recall ever seeing one on period photos but no doubt someone did it. Seems to me that things like seat belts and roll-over protection should be exempt for collector insurance status. More likely to actually need one in an urban setting than on the trail.

I doubt they would drop you for a roll bar put in for safety. If they do they are a terrible insurance company lol. The one in my 46 has an amc sticker on it so I guess they all fit. It came in use once. glad I had it im not sure the windshield would have held up.
