F134 redline

    just installed an aftermarket tach and was wondering where i should set the redline indicater. did a search couldn't get anything definitive
    was wondering if you guys have any answers its a 134 f head thanks

    It won't last as long at 4k but it won't be a catastrophic failure when you do, 3200 is the most i would cruise at, 3600 will simply wear it out quicker than it is worth.

    He was asking about red line, so I assumed he wasn't talking about sustained/ cruise RPM.

    And we should assume it is an engine in good condition. I will never forget blowing all the bearings out of my father's F-head, cruising at road speed with a tired engine.

    I have my redline indicator on my SuperTack set at 4k, but I never run above 3200 sustained or 3500 momentarily.
    But, then I am not in any hurry to get anywhere, either.

    Leave earlier, drive slower and live longer.

    sorry, no offense, I'm pessimistic when i don't know, and didn't want any misconceptions on the "safe redline" as some kids think it is ok to sit there.
    I just want to make sure we try to keep all the f-134s around and in good health, as the numbers are dwindling.
    VNE 4000 rpm
    VNO 3200 rpm

    4000 RPM is the maximum achievable crankshaft velocity for a standard L or F-134 engine.
    4000 RPM specifically implies that the engine can turn no faster due to the intake and exhaust flow restrictions.

    Just as Tim indicated 2200 RPM is the maximum efficient crankshaft velocity.
    Any velocity above or below 2200 RPM is waisting the engines maximum torque potential.

    3200 RPM is what I consider as the maximum sustained crankshaft velocity.
    A constant crankshaft velocity above 3200 RPM will notably shorten the engines service life.

    2700 RPM is the median sustained crankshaft velocity.
    2700 RPM is an intermediate compromise between the maximum efficient and the maximum sustained.
    Due to the engines small displacemment it should be considered as the ideal crankshaft velocity for hiway use.
