F134 Possible Rod Knock

Hello,

My engine started making a new and disturbing noise recently. It sounds like its coming from lower in the engine. I pulled the timing gear cover as that is where it was pretty loud, but nothing stood out to me there. Before I call it worst case scenario does anyone have any other things I can check?

Oof. Doesn't sound good.

Pull the pan, check for bits or shavings that shouldn't be in there, shake the rods back and forth to see if any have a lot of play. Sounds like it could be a rod bearing from here.

 

Use a stethoscope, or wooden dowel between your ear (with your thumb knuckle over the dowel) and the block. Then you can discover the location where the noise is loudest.

Rod bearing knock tends to be louder or quieter depending as the engine is loaded or unloaded. A main bearing would usually be more of a steady rumble.

In my experience, a tired F-134 does not like sustained high rpms.... done any highway cruising lately? How fast? What is the oil pressure?

 

take off pan. See if any of the rods are loose and look for a spun bearing maybe. Its only a pan gasket and some oil.

 

Pull 1 plug wire at a time while running and c if it quietness down?
