A lot would depend on what sort of tire carrier & rear bumper set up you have.
FWIW I am not a fan of strapping 5 gallons of flammable liquid on the back of a vehicle. Just does not seem safe...

I missed seeing what kind of Jeep you are talking about.

I have two extra gasoline tanks in the rear fenders. I don't think they are made any more, but some shop may be able to make them. I've used them for many years (since 1966) and they have been reliable.

This link shows the filler necks. They each hold 6.5 (US) gallons. I have a fuel switch, and an electric fuel pump. I use all the gasoline from the rear tanks before I switch to the seat tank which has the fuel gauge. The front of the tanks follow the contour of the wheel opening.

Not sure if they'll do it, but a company here in Chico, CA might make 'em custom for someone...

Me either but my setup works. I think I got the mount from Confer. I have backed into a few rocks and trees with it though.

Years ago I remember an article in a mag (I think by Willy Worthy?) about being first on scene to a nightmarish rear-end collision on a jeep that had rear-mounted jerry cans. I can't remember more to the story than being horrified enough to never want to to put cans back there.

If you are going by that then the only save place for your gas cans is in your garage.

OK, How did you get that 500 lbs in there? Or did you quarter it up? or just the mount?

Had the same thought. Must be in ziplocks / game bag(s) and nicely stacked under the hide / horns... or the game bags strapped to the hood while the horns ride in the back? :) Seriously though, those are some decent horns.

    John two things:
First, I've seen that photo before and totally ripped off your tire mount idea from that photo. I fabbed mine slightly different but was completely based on your design... so, many thanks to you for posting that. It works fantastic and is very simple.

Second, I have so many questions about this gas tank setup (I suspect others do as well). I really want to use that space inside my fenders and have been considering fuel tanks (or maybe just storage boxes for many things). Can you share pics of the actual tanks and how they are mounted inside the fenders? Are they standalone tanks that are sitting on a shelf or bracket or are they fully fabbed and welded into the body? Are they connected together and level by gravity or do they each have their own fuel pump (actually they must each have their own pump otherwise I guess you wouldn't need separate filler necks, sorry thinking out loud here). Is there something that protects the tank from debris coming off the tires or is the side of the tank now the fenderwell? How big is the gap for the brake lights to still have room? How close to the wheel opening contour can you get without the wheel hitting when stuffed up in there? Where did you run the fuel lines. Anyway like I said, soooo many questions, any additional details would be great and will keep me from reinventing the whole darn thing (y). I even considered just fabbing a shelf or something to hold simple plastic tanks with a drain on the bottom, then I wouldn't need fuel pumps and switches etc. Just stick the 5 gallon can under the drain and then pour back into the underseat tank (except then I still need to carry a can ) .

And if you are still reading, what made you choose the fenderwell tanks over mounting a 2nd tank inside the frame under the rear floor?

Oh my, sorry to hear that, thanks for the info.

I did my usual craigs search today and lo and behold, look what popped up.

So that answers a ton of questions, and I'm pretty sure I can make two of those. I'm ducking out now since I feel like I've really hijacked this thread. Carry on....

Those tanks look like what was in my 1971 Scout 800B but smaller. I have seen plastic replacements for Scouts.

I'm confused, I thought the post about the fender tanks was from his username?
