Engine cut off while driving; won't restart

    Unless I missed it, is this happening ? Do you see fuel squirting into the carburetor ?

    So I got it started. Ran about 15 minutes but it's sputtering badly. Added a water remover and some fuel cleaner additive. Running like **** unless you really rev the gas; much worse at low rpm. Towing it to work so I'll have access to tools.

    Also, I haven't had a chance to see if there is fuel squirting into the carb. I'll try to look tomorrow when I have a chance to start troubleshooting.

    In addition there is some black smoke coming from the exhaust (both sides). It's been running rich for a while, and my fuel economy is awful (~12). I got it towed and tried restarting it...a real struggle but it did eventually. Still running very rough.

    Pop the dist. cap and check for condensation in the cap. If you have some, shoot some WD40 in the cap, wipe out the excess and start it up.

    With that new information, I'd suggest perhaps the carburetor is flooding, fouling the plugs. Check the float valve?

    Finally got it towed to work (where I had tools)...and it started, and didn't even cut off. Thing is, it was running REALLY rough and losing a lot of power as I made a couple laps around the parking lot. Then I took the oil bath air cleaner off the carb, and it was running much better. It looks like the small spring on the top of the carb that "unchokes" the carb when I press the choke cable back in is worn out and doing nothing. Also, the air cleaner seems to be pushing the choke back down when I install it, so it's basically running choked, which I suppose explains the problem. Also, the screw keeps the choke assembly tight on the carb is stripped out, so that's doing nothing as well, although I can probably fix that with a longer screw and a nut on the bottom.

    So I'm wondering if I can replace that spring or if it's going to be impossible to find, or if I just get a new carb? If so, is there any reason to do anything other than a stock replacement? I'm not carb-savvy, so I'm not sure what the benefit of the 4 barrel, etc. carbs are for this 225. FYI, I'm not really riding it off road at this point, although I *MIGHT* later. Maybe. My main concern is the Jeep's viability as a commuter to work (20-mile highway trek), esp. with my terrible 12 mpg.

    NOTE: My oil reeks of gas...but I'm wondering if this might have been from the engine running choked for a while. As far as the engine cutting off...maybe I had a fuel line obstruction or some gelled gas that worked its way out?

    NOTE #2: I'm sick of my oil bath air cleaner, because any oil I put in it comes out pretty fast. I want a normal air filter. Suggestions? (I suppose the new carb argument could affect this decision).

    The gas in the oil is from the choke, i've had it happen to 2 of my antiques. as for the filter, just go to pepboys and go to the performance section and get a cheapo paper element filter for it, they work great.

    That sounds more like a symptom than a reason. I would want to know what is causing that, and fix the root cause. It's trying to tell you something.

    Yep, I concur with Pete, you need to find the ROOT cause...

    Gas in the in oil can be caused from gas washing down the cylinder walls.

    Where is the oil going from your air cleaner???

    The underside of the oilbath air cleaner has a special hump in the bottom designed specifically for the purpose of missing the choke lever. It even has FRONT stamped inside the bottom for proper orientation.
