Can the output bearing on the D18 be changed from the back side behind the Speedo housing or does the shaft have to come out?

It is pretty involved from what I remember the cone is on the shaft and the race is in the speedometer housing shims and press involved. What symptoms do you have? Is there any chance it's just noisy intermediate bearings?

My issue is endplay. I noticed it when installing new u-joints. Doesn't removing shims adjust the slack. The TC is actually fairly quiet and smooth.

Yes it does. How much end play are we talking about? Have you measured with a dial indicator?

Will I use dial today. Looks about 0.020 ? Or so. Worried that the p brake springs will come off.

Just took a short drive to the store and did notice a slight scraping noise around the park brake area. If I find the end play over about 0.008, is removing a shim appropriate ?

I'm a little conerned that , assuming the clearance was correct to begin with, that it's now noticible. IIRC book value is .004" to .008". Before shimming I had .013"

How much did you have after shimming? How thick are the shim? Sorry, can't read your after shim indicator pic.

They vary in thickness, look for etched numbers once the shims are out and clean.

I got it to 5 thou. A shim kit contains multiple thicknesses.

I searched the forum and found a thread that said the bearings are very hard and less apt to wear. But I wonder if them having been loose due to the endplay could have affected the cup. I think I will replace that cup and adjust shims to get set back up. I wouldn't think anything else may have been affected. The rear seal doesn't even leak. Last thoughts before the tools come out?

Verify exactly how much slop there is, if it's anywhere under , oh say 16 thou, I'd leave it alone. you can get yourself into all sorts of trouble replacing things that don't actually need replacing.

That's what I wanted to hear. Not ready for jeep creep. Hopefully shim work will fix me up for at least another year. Thanks Howard

But while you're at it, the tranny could sure use some new synchros, and what about a nice set of new rings and gaskets for your engine? Maybe a 4.3 swap? Just think of the fuel injection!

Ok, project creep is real, and it's a dangerous thing....

Hi Lee, Just to let you know, about three years or so ago I put a Knovak kit in my Jeep. The hardest part was shimming the output shaft for me. It was hard to figure out for me, I used some of the old shims and some of the new shims to get the number I was looking for. I would put it all together and torque it up, check the end play, then take it apart and remove shims and replace them to get the numbers recommended. I kept working on it, take it apart, change shims, torque it up check it again, took me a while before I found what I was looking for. Next you have to put sealer on the shims, and torque it up again, people here said it could leak thru the shims, that changes the reading again. I finally got close to what I was told to have and all is good now. My point being it is a lot harder to re-shim the output shaft then just changing a few shims. My Transfer case would make all kinds of weird noises before I put the kit in, especially decelerating downhill, not anymore, I can slow my Jeep down by backing off and no more weird noises. If you decide to rebuild your Transfer case get a hold of me, I cut my old intermediate shaft to fit inside the intermediate gear and hold the bearings in place while installing and the new shaft will push right thru and your bearing won't fall out. Good Luck

Still wonder if the rear bearing cap may have gotten damaged.

Well, finally got a parking brake backing plate and went to work on the output bearing issue. I tore the rear yoke off and found end play was about 0.018. I used 000 steel wool and polished the shims and mating surfaces on the case. It had 1 thick shim which I knew was more than I needed to remove. There was also 3 shims that were 0.012 thick. So I left 1 of the 0.012 shims out and cleaned each shim and coated them with sealant. Now my end play is around 0.006 and the TC is nice and quiet with only the normal D18 whine. I call it a successful day.
