We had a nice day so I took the Jeep for a drive. One thing I noticed was coolant pooling behind the water pump on the little indents on the timing cover adapter piece. The water pump itself is new and I do not believe is the source of the leak but I haven't dug in too deep. I will be digging in tomorrow but I just wanted to see if this is a common issue with a known fix or if I need to start hunting. Thanks for any tips.

Likely. The fan will throw any leaking fluids everywhere, so don't limit yourself to looking directly above the pools of coolant.

New water pump? Check that the hose clamps don't need tightened up a turn or so.

I'd start there as well...or maybe the bypass hose right below it.

Sounds like my day. Coolant on the garage floor and evidence of it coming out of the weep hole. New FlowKooler pump on the way.

So it doesn't seem to be thermostat cover or the bypass hose as that area is dry as can be. Is it possible for fluid to leak from behind that big timing cover (not sure what its called but the oil filter adapter seems to be part of it)? Its not major yet but I don't want to let it creep up if I am in the woods or something.

Its worth checking that the water pump mounting bolts are properly torqued - I don't know if mine came loose, or if I never torqued them correctly when I was first putting it all back together after rebuild, but mine was leaking a little and the mounting bolts were a bit too loose (guessing I didn't get them torqued correctly when installing). Next, check the weep hole - maybe its time for a new pump. Start with the easy obvious things and keep working up.

I found my leak by running the engine to full temp, then shut it off and quickly cleaned up any puddles and then watched and inspected closely for the next 10-20 minutes. I found a fresh small puddle developing that helped find the leak. As tim says, the fan can blow the coolant around, so get it cleaned up quick and let the leak reveal itself with hot engine but the fan off.

Bottom of the thermostat cover on the inside where the hose goes around it gets eaten away. It will weep coolant. Tear off that hose and check. I initially fixed that same problem on mine a couple years ago

Thanks Chris. So I had a moment to take a look today and realized that the leak is coming from the coolant bypass hose itself. When I put on the new water pump I reused that hose without even thinking and I just realized that the hose I have is a piece of heater hose that the previous owner put on and there is a splice with copper tubing in the middle . If I am not mistaken I just need a one piece hose from the small port on the thermostat housing to the small port on the water pump. I currently do not have a heater on the Jeep so the port on the manifold is blocked off with a valve. I see a molded hose on rock auto but that doesn't seem to be the correct shape for my setup. My water pump port comes out vertical and the lower hose hookup on the thermostat housing is horizontal. I almost need a right angle hose. Any information on that part number? Thanks

Perhaps I have a different block adapter from a non-Jeep product? Mine definitely comes out vertical from the water pump. I will take a picture tomorrow. A little hunting and I should be able to find some sort of premolded hose to do the trick.

Hope you find that right angle hose. I'm gonna need one also for the 231 v6 that I'm putting in the 3b. Looks like a 90* bend for sure.

Its possible - just make sure you are not confusing the bypass hose with the heater hose nipple (the vertical nipple seen here on the radiator inlet connection):

Thanks James. Maybe I did get the hoses hooked up wrong. I will take a look tomorrow. I seem to recall something now: the heater hose port on the manifold was tee'd in with the heater hose outlet on the water pump and the bypass. All three came together as I seem to recall now. So what I did was plug the manifold heater port and now I believe I may have connected the heater hose port to the bypass...I don't recall there being a port on the back of my adapter for the bypass hose though.
