What is the cure for the side-to-side slop in the clutch and brake pedals coming up through the floor? It's very annoying to listen to the darn things scrape against the floor pan whenever I mash them down, let alone hearing them rattle against it whenever I'm NOT mashing them down  Thanks for any tips!!

Someone, Steve Lane(?), found a bushing that will fix that right up.

Didn't it have something to do with the M38A1 pedal hanger? I can't remember. Was just thinking about this the other day.

    Yup. :)

Actually, the key is in replacing the pedal pivot shaft, and getting a nice snug fit between the shaft and the pivot bracket on the underside of the frame. The problem is, the '2A has the pivot welded to the frame, so unless you are willing to cut the old one off and replace it with a pivot bracket from an M-38A1, you're going to have to settle for what you get with just replacing the shaft. They're fairly inexpensive at places like Walck's, KRAGE, etc.

IIRC, Dr. Vern http://www.vernco.com had a write-up on his site about how he reproduced the Willys factory kit to take up the play in the pedals. Check it out on his site!

An M38A1 pedal support would work fine. They are not that expensive and fairly easy to get.

The slick sheet catalog vendors won't have them; they probably won't know what you are talking about since it doesn't appear in their catalog. Most of these guys can't even spell jeep, much less know anything about them.

However, an old time parts guy who sells military jeep parts will know exactly what you need and will likely have it.

You'll have to take the old one off the frame. I've never done this on a 2A, but I have on a cj5. Rivets are a pain to get off, and I don't remember, but there might be a tack weld on it as well.

The 'new' pedal support will have three holes, so you'll have to drill another hole in the side of the frame. The other two holes align perfectly with the existing holes.

If you own and use your jeep long enough to wear out the bushings in this one, you can replace the bushings (not available in civilian version) in stead of the whole unit next time.

I'm wondering if a guy couldn't just fab something up that uses some appropriately sized tubing/pipe to replace what's under there? Maybe even get fancy and use some captive bearings... I need to crawl under it tonight and put my thinking cap on.

Jeep made a pedal wobble fix kit for the CJ. It was basically a bolt with some washers that drew the pedals inward.

I've heard them described, but never seen a wobble fix kit

I did something similar on my CJ5. While it doesn't eliminate the slop in the shaft/bushing, it does help with the side to side play. It is an easy solution....
