Cleaning Out A Tranny While Its Mounted In The Jeep?

    Are you saying you use ATF as the full time lube? :shock:

    I'm not a petroleum engineer, but I'd be extremely concerned that it doesn't have the 'stuff' to protect hypoid gears under load.

    From Wikipedia...

    "Gear oil
    is a lubricant made specifically for transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials in automobiles, trucks, and other machinery. It is of a higher viscosity to better protect the gears. The high viscosity ensures transfer of lubricant throughout the gear train.

    Most lubricants for manual gearboxes and differentials contain extreme pressure (EP) additives and antiwear additives to cope with the sliding action of hypoid bevel gears."

    I worked for me for a short amount of time just to clean out the housing. You could also mix it half and half and run it for a short amount of time to clean it out. I running 85-140 in the axles now and 75-90 in the trans and transfer case.
