That means a flat fender frame. Is the front cross member round?

That 1" difference could be because of variances with the springs. Or your Jeep could be sitting on an early flat-fender frame.

Hello, I just got my jeep cj5 (title says 1964) stripped down to the frame in order to rebuild it. On the DRIVERS side of then frame above the rear axle I found the number 12218, this corresponds (http://jeepwillysworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Vehicle_Indentification.pdf) to a serial number from 1955, but.... it was on the drivers side of the frame; not the passenger side as most things I have read said it would be. The front of the frame has been worked on numerous times (obvious signs of welding and grinding) so that location is blank.

Do any of you guys know if the serial numbers in some years were on the drivers side of the frame, not the passenger side?

VIN on the title matches the VIN tag on the firewall which is held on with crappy sheet metal screws; obviously there has been some musical VIN's going on with my Jeep which is from what I understand pretty normal. But if I could title and register the Jeep as a 1955 I might go through the trouble of doing so.

I am pretty dumb (got a note from my doctor to prove it) so am I maybe just looking at a part number stamped on the frame?

Sheet metal screw holding the vin tag on are normal for our early CJ's, so don't worry about that. I think I remember reading that sometimes serial numbers were also stamped at the back of the frame, so maybe that's the case with yours.

As Glenn stated above, the correct factory fasteners for the serial tag are short phillips head sheetmetal screws for your vintage Jeep. I have never seen the serial number anywhere except the right frame rail top just ahead of the firewall, and/or over the rear axle. That number on the left rail may be Willys' part number for the left rail. See if there is a similar number on the right rail, maybe a few digits off. I have found part numbers stamped in for each frame rail on one of my Willys wagons.
Does your body have a "lid" on the top pasenger side cowl behind the hood? This feature disappeared sometime late in the '64 model run. What do the front turn signal lights look like, clear glass or amber plastic? Just another quick telltale of the year, provided they are original.
