Well a small update, not too much progress over the last few days.. Just some sanding on the POR 15 with 320 grit to get it ready for the topcoat. I ended up sucking it up and getting the POR topcoat and primer, I just don't want to cut any corners on this thing. I have the POR self etch primer and the POR chassis black on order and it should be here early next week. Ordered some more parts like brake lines and brake hoses, a drum since 1 was MIA, and some other things. The rear bumper came in without the front bumper... It shoudl be here next week also and then I will get them powder coated. Other than that, not much news. I did paint the axles with POR 15 and used the same process, I didn't paint the knuckles or backing plates as I was contemplating on upgrading to 11" drums but am just going to stick with the 10" for now. I will probably end up just painting them with regular black paint once the brake lines are in though. Don't have much POR 15 left and I'll need some for touch ups later on when we weld the few places that need repair down the line. Wasn't the initial plan but I didn't want to purchase a welder when we have one at the family farm.

I did run into a problem with the POR 15 in one area. It was an area where we took the grinder to the frame so it was shiny metal. It came off using my fingernail, pretty small area but I peeled it all off where is was not sticking well and sanded/degreased/etched it again. After 24 hours the new coat was good, no problems anymore, still annoying though. The rest of the paint is solid, seems rock hard. There are some runs since I put it on so heavy but i am able to smooth it out with sanding enough to be ok with it.

Here are some pictures... So close to being able to put things back together it's killing me! Can't wait.

Some of the rusty parts I have cleaned up recently.

Here is the rear bumper at least, with the spare tire carrier and hi lift jack mount. Made from "bobsfabshop" on eBay which I'm pretty sure is previously known as dirtworx, as the dirtworx store is no longer active. Great quality though, very excited about them.

And 1 more close up of the POR before it's nice smooth glossy finish get sanded away.

Other than that, I'll pick up the rear frame crossmember either tomorrow or Saturday and get that on and painted.

Quick tip for anyone who may stumble across this and be looking for extended brake hoses on an ECJ5. I couldn't find them anywhere, NAPA can make them at $10 a foot of hose and $9 a fitting. But I found them on eBay made by goodridge... And they are up to 4in of lift which is what I have. Priced very well, like $50ish total for all 3 flexible hoses. Pretty sure they are carried by "4.wheel.parts" eBay store.

re. The chassis black top coat I suggest you try it in one spot first & see how you like it. I tried it out on my axles & INMHO it's pretty horrible crap :( Didn't go on well, didn't flow & level nicely like the 15 & scratched off easily. I ended up sandblasting it all off & redoing them & the chassis with regular single stage poly- IIRC corretly the paint shop said it was mid-80s Volvo chassis paint, came out looking beautiful.

Oh man, I hope that doesn't happen! I will try it out first for sure then. Everything I have read seemed that people were mostly happy, but I would take your word for it over a few random threads I have read... Fingers crossed!

I hope that shop is still robert at thedirtworx.

If it's not him I could always drive down when I'm ready for my bumper I suppose.

Man it looks good too. Did you also get a front bumper?

Got the front bumper today, also the rear frame cross member and the shackles came in. The shackles come from the courtesy of McRuff and the cross member I ordered from a local jeep shop here in orlando. I have been sick for past 5 days and not much has been done. The chassis black will be here Friday, hope to get everything topcoated by middle of next week.

Shackles which are 1" longer, measured using bolt holes.

Rear crossmember which is thicker metal and doesn't need the reinforcement inside piece like what was previously on the jeep. [IMG]

Hope by the next 2- 3 weeks to have a roller again.

So you're mounting your bumper to the rear crossmember?

Yes, the bumper mounts are on either side of the frame. This was the way I was thinking it should be.. Using the crossmember. Is that not normal? I considered cutting the ends off so it looked better but thought it should look ok since the crossmember is flush with the end of the body. Let me know what you think. [IMG]

I'm just curious. I don't know if I want to replace my beat crossmember with another and then put on a bumper on like you did or just have a bumper made to replace the crossmember.

I don't know whats considered normal. I was hoping you would know.

Haha I definitely do not know for sure. From all the looking I have done, cutting the ends of the crossmember seems normal. Like this:[IMG]

Figured I would just go with it, once I got the rear bumper I figured it would be easier to have to crossmember there to mount it to since the mounts were on either side of the frame rail. Even the crossmember will have to be drilled though. I was also worried about the bumper sticking out far enough without the crossmember as the top, which swings, has to be able to be directly on top of the bumper to latch. Gonna take them to work tomorrow and hopefully drop them off to get powder coated the day after when I leave the station. I guess we will see within a couple weeks or so!

Another arrival. Late delivery via UPS. The brake hoses. The rear line is the correct length, but the fronts are not much longer than the stock lines. I remember a lot of slack of the stock length so hopefully this will suffice. They were advertised as 4 in lift brake hoses...

Rear with a stock omix-ada next to it

    Front, same. [IMG]

I removed my shocks to get full drop out of my D27 and I still hadn't exceeded whatever hoses I have right now. I think as long as you check before you hit the trail you'll be fine.

If you ever going to use those big tow shackles on the rear bumper or tow with that hitch you need to better secure that bumper to something stronger than just that 3/16" or 1/4" metal cross-member...........like running a 3/16-1/4" plate up either or both sides of the rear frame rails towards the front maybe 12" ..........just the weight of the bumper , the tire carrier and a tire will put a strain on that rear frame. I see the method being employed here and how the cross-member is being used but that part is only attached to the open end of the frame via a few 3/8" bolts on the end..................or am I missing something?

Something will get done, you haven't missed anything. I just have not mentioned it since I just got them in. Same with the front and the winch. There is an issue up front with the bottom of the frame rail that needs some welding and fabrication. Sometime soon after it becomes a roller, I'll throw it on a trailer and take it to a friends place or a family members place to get that done along with some other things, like fixing the crack in the frame. I did buy all new grade 8 bolts as well. The previous setup had metal from the frame to the ends if the crossmember like this: [IMG]

I'd like to repeat that and maybe do some more. The front frame rail looks like this. [IMG]

And the bumper uses those 2 bolts on the bottom. Not a huge fix, but still a fix nonetheless. So along with the repairs I will definitely do some reinforcing since I will be taking it offroad occasionally and might need the tow hooks, the hitch probably won't be used, unless I take the jeep project I abandoned before this one and make a trailer out of the body... But that's a long ways away.

Thanks! I am definitely excited about the project and find it hard not to stay in the garage every day!

Hope to have everything on the frame done by Christmas so I can haul it up to the family farm and let my father tackle the engine, then bring the body back down. I have a feeling it will take a lot longer to fix, and I might have to buy a welder at that point... Not in a hurry or anything though, if it takes longer then that's just fine.

Here is an example of what Tarry was describing. This was built by member xarmtdawg. This a good way to mount the tire carrier/bumper to the frame. Bolting the tire carrier to the cross member alone would not be strong enough IMHO

So, just trying to figure this out, the bumper is attatched to the inner frame and bolted to the upper frame "V" support like the draw bar does?
