Question about a brake distribution block on a 76 cj5. Brake fluid leaking from the electrical fitting. For the year the part to replace this is wrong. The jeep has 4 wheel drum brakes. THERE IS NOT A PROPORTION VALVE, ALTHOUGH THE YEAR CALLS FOR IT. THE MOST SIMILAR PART i found was on a site called inline tube. They have a mopar distribution block--not specific for a jeep but it looks the same. Has anyone run in to this problem or had to replace this part.

I believe that is just a pressure switch as far as I know.. I'd remove it and apply some Teflon tape to the threads and re-install it.

I had one of these on a '76 postal jeep I stripped down- Straight through passages on each side for the front/back circuits with ports for the brake light switches, there's also a piston slider switch in the middle to light up the dash dash brake warning light if pressure on one side drops because of a leak.

I know there was a post on here not too long ago with a link to a catalog listing for replacements, actually a chrysler part IIRC.

Yeh. It is where the brake warning plugs in. I don't know if it screws out. It is a slow leak, but makes me nervous to have brake fluid leaking. All the brake parts are new except the lines and that part. I will try looking at it again to see if it is removable and try the chrysle sites

Jeep calls it a "combination valve" and it has a proportioning function to hold off the rear brakes to prevent rear-wheel lockup with heavy brake application. It's described in the 1976 TSM which is on-line here: http://oljeep.com/gw/76_tsm/Section9.pdf look at figure 9-7 and accompanying text.

You definitely want the 4-wheel DRUM BRAKE proportioning valve, if you replace it. All the valves on the inline tube page are disk front - drum rear that I can see. The inline tube page offers a valve for the 1976 CJ, but this is wrong because disk brakes were not offered for the CJ in 1976... 1977 was the first year for optional front disk brakes.

You may be able to replace the switch in the top of the combination valve and have it stop leaking. There is a replacement switch for GM-type valves on the inline tube page.

that is exactly what it is--thank you. combination valve. on mine it did not look like that center switch comes out, but it was hard to see with the exhaust pipe in the way. I looked at it for weeks with the engine out and never thought it would be leaking. appeciate everyone's help.

The factory describes it as " Brake Warning and Proportioning Valve".
    For drum brakes only.
The original Jeep part number for your application was: 5355378
