Hi all, noob here, did some searching, but to no avail. The F134 in my 61 CJ5 won't crank with a brand new batt and new cables. It's been sitting for 15 years. I suspect a good twist on the crank will free it up (or at least confirm that it spins free) Since my tools are in one spot and the Jeep in another, one hour away, does anyone know off hand the wrench size that'll fit the crank pulley bolt. It looked real big and I didn't have the size readily on hand today when I was working on it today. I'd like to have the right size tomorrow.

Appreciate the assistance. Does anyone have thoughts on this. The Jeep ran well when parked, but has been neglected. Could the starter be the culprit? I do hear it engaging when I turn the key but it sounds like it's stalled.

I've got an L-head in mine and I'm pretty sure the nut size is 1-3/8. I'm guessing that it's the same one.

Try going to Harbour Freight and picking up a cheap set of sockets. I bought impact ones and they cost me ~$25 but they are 3/4 drive and didn't come with a ratchet.

Eliminate the potential problems. Pull the starter (mine is only two bolts) and use a set of jumper cables to jump it while it is off of the engine. Be careful though because the starter is likely to jump around on you. Also just touch the positive to the solenoid. If you hard connect it and leave it you might damage it or yourself.

If the starter doesn't turn over you can rebuild it or try to find a replacement. If you have to replace it I saw a thread here about using a Toyota (?) starter. It might be worth looking into.

there are at least two crank nut sizes for F4

    my '57 3B had a 1 3/8 nut , the overhaul on 3B page had a 1 7/16 nut

check out the 3B page for tips on cranking up a long sitting engine ...

I would remove the spark plugs and just try turning the engine over by turning the fan, thats how I did it when I adjusted the valves.

1 7/16 is what it should be, same size as my rear axle nut on my Jeep truck. Yeah remove the plugs so that you don't strain yourself on the compression stroke.

The nut on my F134 is 1 3/8". Looks like you better take both sockets.

Thanks guys, I got it freed up, but not before smashing my thumb between the breaker bar and the leaf spring. Ouch!
