Where do you have your jerry can mounted or auxiliary gas cans mounted?

Pics please. I'm trying to figure out a place to mount mine.

Also, is it law that the gas can/jerry can containing combustable fuel be painted red?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Re: Auxiliary Fas Can Mounting ?

I have a family cage on my 6 and I mounted the can inside the cage so I won't smash ANOTHER one.

I used to have mine mounted where the spare tire goes.

Works well, just don't forget it's there. Sorry, no pics. Can't find any and I don't have it mounted there anymore. Needed to fit it in a little one car garage packed with junk.

Hahaha-smash it. I can picture it now. Spare location is a good spot as well.

This is how I had them mounted-scanned photo from about 1992. Key word here is "had". A rear aux tank is a much better solution.

Any of the swing-out rear tire carrier/can racks for a CJ 5/6 will bolt on a flatty. The tail gate and rear tub dimensions are the same.

On my CJ5 I modified a CJ7 tire carrier to do the job

I don't have a top for the flatty and the cans don't leak so this works for me. A larger rear tank is in the future when the rebuild finally gets here.

I mounted mine opposite to the military jeep standard. I put the spare wheel on the drivers side and the fuel on the passenger side. Since the fuel can is smaller and generally lower it provides a better view of that corner when backing up in tight places. Handy when off roading in the bush and trees.

Ok I mounted one on the CJ8. Since these are notorious for leaking I did not want to put it on the roll bar. So I mounted it here so the rocks and trees can take it out - hopefully not.

The kids now want one and will have to mount there's on the back. I will forward this post so they can look at what has been presented.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Now I just need to tap in a + & - wire from the brake light to run my 12v electric fuel pump. This way I can just pump it out into the vehicle or if need be.

Anyone know where I can get a gasket locally ?

I have a bigger rubber gasket installed on the can that us on the Jeep and it covers the breather hole - but keeps it from leaking.

Not 100% sure if I should cover this hole or not-they always leak from there.

I believe the lid/gasket is supposed to seal the vent hole when tight. Never had one leak from the vent. Be careful buying gaskets. It's the Omix-ada thing. One bunch I got must have been made from old intertubes and immediately became soft when hit with gas-so soft they would twist out from under the lid. I think the last ones I purchased were from the local Co-op farm supply (Cenex) and were fine.

Maybe too late for your mounting, but it is best to mount them above bumper height so at least they don't get smashed in a low speed collision.

Thank for the vent info-wasn't sure. The other gasket in the pic is thin an doesn't cover the hole-thus it leaks, but the other one covers it and no leaks so far.

Also, thanks for the tip on the bumper height-make since.

4 gal of gas cap on tight and vent holes covered by the bigger gasket I have.

Might just toss this setup and use those plastic skinny tanks.
