I agree with bkap, it sounds to me like it is going dead lean. You said you rebuilt the carb, so that is where I would start at this point.

Is the float set too low? Needle and seat stuck partially closed? As stated before, it is hard to diagnose from a distance, but it certainly sounds like it is going dead lean too me.

Mufflers or the lack thereof will have absolutely no effect on the timing. They will effect the combustion in the cylinder. With headers and no mufflers, the engine should run leaner than with the mufflers installed. No mufflers should make the problem worse if it is a mixture problem. If I remember correctly though you stated that it ran better with no mufflers..........don't know.

ok first of i agree with you sparky, and i always have that it is not mufflers, but i had to eliminate that possibility, second i agree it has soemthing to do with carb related, i dont think its the dist... if it is DUI will oh me a new one, this one is about 2 weeks old, and at 400 bucks a piece i expect it to be perfect when i get it... i have never hooked up the vac advance yet, that line is still plugged coming from the carb. i believe that this is a fuel issue of some sort, but im baffled at why it ran fine, and then got shut down for two days till the mufflers came in and now the problem is there..... the mufflers will be going back on tonight, and the carb is coming apart. maybe it is float or needles.. i just dont know yet, but the carb is my next area to attack.....

I would look at barrowing a cap from a running jeep. It sounds to me that you are doing evereything right. I have reciently purchased a new distributor from dui and it was sent with a mismanufactured cap. They now reconize the caps and are aware of thier problem. Im sure there are others out there. DUI stands behind there products and are great to work with, maybe they can help you. By the way you describe your problem you may have a bad cap. Best of luck, I became so frustrated with with bad parts I am now running a stock distributor.

i will give them a call... thank you very much!!... also, just throwing this out there, but is there any possibility that the timing chain may have jumped a tooth?? just laying in bed last night thinking of possibilties and that one popped in

I have an electric choke 2G I could send you if you want to try it, it was known to be good when pulled, other then the choke was jacked up.

I have 3 carbs, -- it would only cost you shipping.

One thing at a time here.

I'd hold off on the carb until you know it's bad.

    Besides, wasn't it just rebuilt?

yup, it was rebuilt by me, and it was my first time, so i probablly screwed it all up...... i was just thinking for only a 100 bucks i get a prof rebuilt new one, and i can rebuild my old one again for practice... i dont know, im just really frustrated here, i was hoping to have this on the road by the end of august, but the two weeks i should have been installing the lift and rewiring i have been screwing with the motor.... looks like i will have all winter to work on finishing her up at this point.....

Pretty hard to mess up a 2G, I thought I would then when I got it apart was way more simple then my Edelbrock.

I think you have something else going on, wait and see what that cap does.

I would also wait to see if the cap fixes it first. Not all "off the shelf" rebuilt carbs are as good as they should be (kind of like rebuilt starters)... and it would suck to continue having problems.

<----these words are worth their weight in gold.

A 2G is pretty hard to screw up. Even if you have to rebuild it again it's still cheaper than $100. Even a rebuilt one doesn't solve all your problems all the time. DAMHIK.

alright...... heres my next question, if i disconnect the coil wire, and try and strat the jeep with my hand over the carb, if it feels like its trying to puke through the carb still that would tell me that its not the cap right???

well, a buddy and i just verified that we are definetly timed right, still doing the same darn thing, and just for giggles i did pull the coil wire and it acted 100% normally with no issues other than not firing obviously.... the jeep is back in the garge, and will stay there till the new cap comes in and we will go from there.... issue is dead untill then... thanks again for everyones help on this issue that has now gone on for 5 pages....

    Plug wires are different.

Coil power would be the same.
