Hi , Can someone tell me if Steering Gear Brackets from a 76-84 CJ will Bolt on a 72 CJ5, I am pretty sure the Steering Shaft has different ends.

    Thanks

No the 72 has a cast bracket that mounts inside the c-channel frame member. The 76-84 bracket bolts to the surface of the boxed frame.

Now the steering gear boxes themselves are interchangable. A gear box from a 76-84 will bolt to the bracket from a 72. Heck, I run the power steering box off of a TJ on my 72 bracket. You can always replace the rag joint on the end of the steering shaft with a newer u-joint design. In my case I ran the rag joint off of the 72 on the tj gearbox with zero problems until I swapped out the steering column this year. That was about 4 years of hard wheeling and road driving.

Rag joint? I though all these Jeeps came with the bell coupler, not the rag joint. A rag joint

is a rubber disk that lloks like a section of tire. My pickup has a rag joint, but my CJ, and my previous CJs, have the bell coupling. The bell coupling is available aftermarket; looseness in the coupling is a common problem.

That said, these Saginaw power steering boxes are a commodity item. You can use a steering box from many different vehicles and it will bolt right up to the bracket.

If you have a broken bracket, you need to find a used one or make one somehow. There is no aftermarket source for a '72-75 steering bracket, and the later brackets won't work in place of them.

I ended up building my own steering box bracket out of 3/8 plate since none are commercially available. I haven't figured out how to post pictures or I would attach one.

I'm not bright enough to attach a picture but if you give me your email address I'll send you a picture of the stock steering box bracket and the one I built.
