I have a 64 willys jeep cj5 12 volt system,I am needing to see if the wiring to the voltage regulator is correct,it has generator, there has been many hands on it over the years before i got it.
the voltage regulator has a 'bat'terminal, a 'fld'terminal, a 'arm' terminal. and a ground wire
    A diagram/sketch would be awesome,
there is a guage in the dash,
two terminals on the generator, I believe the terminal on the end is armiture , and the one on the side is field?
the bat goes to key on hot?

Now the way is currently wired the bat terminal goes to the side terminal on the generator.
and two wires go the the fld terminal

Is there a way to test the voltage regulator???
    thanks

Test proceedures are in the factory service manual.

    here's a simplified diagram-

The colours in the diagram match up with this photo-

Your ammeter as described would be in the lead between the regulator battery "B" terminal & the starter solenoid.

thanks for the info , it was wired wrong.
the voltage regulator is not working.....there are many volt regulators out there, and i am pretty sure ,the one that is on now is not the oem one.
the oem one is pretty costly, one like is on it is eighty bucks, question is: can i buy a less expensive aftermarket one, that will work?
I have seen some twelve volt ones for tractors for like 20 bucks, just now sure if they would do the job?
I know some coils work interchangable, please advise
    thanks

I put my Generator and Regulator in a Rubbermaid toat box and put a GM one wire alternator on my Jeep. It is the easiest and cheapest way to have dependable 12volts at around 60 amps without any problems. I bought an off shore GM 110 amp one wire off E-Bay for $65.00, shipping included, and it is chromed.

The voltage regulator needs to match the generator design. The wrong reg can tell the generator to keep charging more (amps) damaging the generator.

I would have liked to put a alternator in the system ,however the pump for the plow is mounted to the generator.

Give it a whack with a big hammer, the relays inside can get sticky. If that doesn't work open it up & see what the points look like.
