58 heater core

The radiator shop just gave me the news that the heater core is no good. He said he found one with the same measurements that he could remove my sides and solder them on to it. But $150 for the core only. Ouch. I can't seem to find a replacement for these early CJ's. Any suggestions?

 

Put a WTB in the classified section here. Maybe someone has one that's good. Worth a shot.

 

That's how I got the one I have. My jeep did not have factory one so I'm adding it factory type. The guy said it did not leak but just putting water in it proved otherwise.

I have sucessfully re-soldered more than one old core, personally.
A good "old fashioned" radiator shop can repair anything, IF you can get someone willing to try.

One advantage is that the old parts are much more substantial, and if repaired may well outlast a new core.

 

How did the heater change between 1958 and 1961? RockAuto shows a Spectra 94566 replacement heater core for a '61 F134 CJ-5 for ca $70. I suspect it's something trivial different, like hose diameter. RockAuto posts a picture and measurements of the core - take the Spectra number to your FLAPS and get them to order one. If you are a good customer, they may let you compare the new core to the one you have, and if it won't work, they can send it back.

Are you restoring your Jeep to original or do you just need heat? If it's heat your after, do a search here for the Summit heater. It's a good unit. Those that have replaced their original heater say the Summit heater is a major upgrade. My Jeep didn't have a heater when I bought it, so I had no basis for comparison, but I can tell you that it provides plenty of heat.

 

Reading this I'm trying to figure out how to get with Jeepermc to see how he handled the new core but the old one had bends in the in/out. When I go to that page it logs me out. How do you message a member on this forum?

I bought a original placebo heater on ebay for mine since it was missing. It came with the bent tubes on the heater core and I wish it went straight out instead

 

Wow. Old post. I didn't have to do anything special. The hoses went right onto the new heater core. They just connect straight up instead of angled now. No big deal.

 

I found one from O'Reilys but it would not fit the internal brackets that keep it in place and I didn't want to mess with trying to adjust that too. So I found another place in San Antonio that replaced the core on my tanks for $90 so that's what I did. But it's 103 degrees outside today so I haven't tested its functionality just yet.

 

I don't remember exactly, but I think I used the core from 66 V 6 in my 134 F, I dismantled a V 6 and have two heater cores, both the same? Just saying.

 

I ended up finding another place that put my tanks on a new factory size matching core for $90

 

Can anyone post a picture of the heater that came with a 1958 cj5? One was in mine but I’m not sure it is original and worth repairing.
