I agree! Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

You should be able to run 50 with out the :hurrican: screaming blood murder , I can get 60ish on mine if I push her but I hate being that mean to the poor girl.

ETA: Tune up , plugs, points, timing ,vavle adjustment and carb tuned?

If the engine runs fairly smoothly but just lacks power, I'd try advancing the timing a smidge to see if that helps. You can use a timing light, but the timing marks on the flywheel are darned difficult to see even when they are painted nice and purty.

if you have a vacuum gauge, hook it up to the manifold vacuum (not ported vacuum from the carb) and adjust the timing 'till you get the highest reading you can get. That will get you close. ;)

You do have it in high range right?
According to the calculator, at 35mph with 30" tires, you'd be turning just over 2100RPM. You should still have a LONG way to go before it redlines.

Yes…it is in 2 wheel drive, high range. I am extremely frustrated to say the least. Could I have a major issue that I am not aware of?

have you checked to make sure your linkage to your caburetor is opening up the butterflys in your carb all the way? check to see what rpms you are turning.

Ummmmm if it is really redlining it could be a slipping clutch but you would smell that right quick ,

Tranny could be toast and the gears are slipping but you would notice that too.

slipping spines on the yokes or driveshaft but that should cause vibration,

Tcase shifter damage of some sorts and the case is stuck in low lock even though the stick is in the high loc pos which seems the most logical.

ETA: you need to get a tach if you think you are redlining . Hurricane should take 4000 rpms before it gets critical.

you will have to hook a tachometer to it to check the rpm

    :iagree:

When we got Tonk h'e'd only do 35. Problem turned out to be green shag carpeting, Replaced with moderate quality black borg & cruise immediately went up to 45 with a top speed of 60.

If you add an overdrive, it would be like having 4.10 gearing when the O.D. is engaged. (approximately)

Then you get the best of both worlds. Off-road, the gearing you need, on road it sure helps out.

What size tires are you running? I can't help but wonder if your speedometer isn't just reading behind. I know I have that problem on the ones I have 'cause ain't any of them have stock size tires. Some read 15 mph slow.

<edit> I just read your intro, with 31" tires your speedo is going to read slow. Have someone ride behind you in a vehicle that reads correctly see how fast they're going. You can also check it with the mile markers along the road. I like to use my hand held gps for a proper reading. Mine on my 58 reads 15mph slow with 33" tires on my 53 more than that .

The flatfender dash plates show a max. permissible speed of 60mph. That's with stock tires and undoubtedly 5.38 gears.
