I'm looking to build a 2x4 frame do that I can keep my current cj5 on the road as long as possible while building a new rolling chassis with a Ford 302 and t19 and a pair of narrow track Wagga dana 44s.

That said, I have a cut sheet from one of the off road magazines that show 2x4x.120 tube on the outer space and bumpers but 2x4x.188 in the middle. Would that be tough enough for my mild v8 build or would you go with .188 for the frame rails and .120 for the bumpers or all .188?

Have you seen this thread? It might help you along the way, even though it's not a for a 5 (and Chris hates building stuff).

I have read all the way through that at least twice. I will have some help from some good certified welders and off road enthusiasts I work with. I am an engineer at a steel powder making plant and our maintenance deals with some major welding almost constantly.

I do. I am tired of it. I can make things adequately well, but I am just over it. That will probably change at some point in time..

Anyway, build the frame. Its pretty easy. Looking back, I would do it exactly as it turned out again in like 2 or 4 days. I WOULD definitely make a custom rear mount gas tank. I would also make catamarans off the frame for roll bar points. Other than that, I drove it today and it its great. The wall thickness is plenty. It turned out very well for my purposes.

Next project would definitely include some of these aspects. Varg in Jeep's Clothing

I was also planning on the outriggers but wanted to incorporate them into frame mounted rocker guards too...
