Here's the queston. I have 2 Jeeps worthy of being finished. If I keep them both, one as a driver and one as a off road only what do you think I should do? At present the 74 is stock. I6, T14/D20 and I think 3.34 gears in the D30/D44's. The 66 is a V6, T90/D18/OD with 5.38's in the D30 with disc brakes (perches over and under) and stock D44. It also has springs from a CJ7. I also have a Ford T18 and a Jeep T150/D20 laying around along with a spare stock 70 frame. Which one would make the better driver/all around Jeep and which one would make the better off road machine.

I would beat on the '74 offroad and drive the '66. Having the 5.38's in your offroad machine would be good. Then just send the T18 to me so you don't have to think about it.

I would keep your 1974 jeep in stock condition. And use the already modified 66 jeep for your off road rig. Frankly, I prefer to keep all my jeeps as close to factory stock as possible. It is just a thing with me.
(here is my recent stock jeep. : http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7125

I know those things are more fun off road with the big tires and stuff.
But running down the highway on a rainy or icy day and having to make a quick stop, I feel a stock jeep will be much safer. Especially if you get into skid and get sideways. Just my opinion. Congratulations on having 2 jeeps. One for playing in the dirt, and the other one as a daily driver.

I would say also kee pteh 74 for road duties and the 66 for offroad. the 5.38s kill you on the road for speed. Drop in the T18 in the 66 and you will have one stout trail jeep. HHMMM you have an extra frame, i may have to get with you in a few months and see if you want to part with it :)

The '74 will have better road manners and another Early on the trail is just what we need.

OR you could sell the '74 and put that money into that sweet Willys pickup you have for a DD. :D

You know Mike, you may want to take the 74 and put it into the Willys Wagon. The 258 6 cyl would be nice in th ewagon and you could sell the cj body and frame and recoup some costs.

A '74 will be a lot more comfortable and safer driver. Probably cheaper to run and maintain too. Stock gear ratios in '74 were 3.73 and 4.27.

I belive the 74 sounds like it would be better at keeping up with traffic.

I'd go with the '74 on the road, and keep the '66 with those 5.38 gears on the the trails. Like timgr said '74 gearing is 3.73. As far as takin' a '74 into the woods and trails with a T-14, D-20 combo with 3.73 gears that what I run in my '74. I just try not to get in over my head on trails I know I can't get out of.

    Make the '74 the DD.

I drove "Granny" back to my house, and let me tell you, even though they are really close to an early CJ5, they are much more comfortable. The hanging pedals and manual saginaw steering make things really nice.

    Just my .02
