My 1972 CJ5 only has the VIN on the frame for me to reference, and I was thinking about making a new dash decal, but I'm not sure what month it was produced. The last 5 digits are 021XX. I was thinking probably Sept, maybe? Any ideas?

What's the build date on the engine? There are also build dates on the axles.

You have to believe that 2100 is in the earliest batch of '72 production, and it was a year with a lot of changes for the smaller Jeeps. So I expect Jeep produced at least that many before the beginning of the model year in September - enough to put the new models on all the dealer lots. My best guess is August, since they shut down and retooled May-June-ish, and started to build inventory for the next model year in the summer. Even July is possible.

Well I have a few pics of those tags from cj5s off of the internet and one Aug 1971, 00336. Then I have one from Nov 1971, 15883. If I knew production numbers from each month I could make a guess. I can check the engine tag, assuming it is the original motor, but like most CJs it has clearly had a storied past that I know little about.

Well, if it's a V8, the build date is on the valve cover, and I would expect that to be kept with the engine regardless of history. A 6 will be stamped into the block.

The production numbers by month are either long gone, or in the hands of someone that does not care. So not much chance of help from that direction. Look at the axles - i recall that there is build date info in the stamps on the axles, but I have no idea how to read that. An internet search might enlighten us.

IMO 300 is not that far from 2100, since total production is around 50,000 (all Jeep production for 1972). The early rate is a lot higher than the later rate too. That suggests August as a best guess.

I like you have a early 72 cj5, vin number ends in 0062xx and the date on the sticker is Sept 1971, my V8 saids on the build date is 23 August 1971, so I guess mine is a very early sept production, so I would guess yours could be a August production month. Where does one check the axles for production date?
