Thanks for your reply Maury. I'm wondering if the absence of a VIN decal on the dashboard plus the "Kaiser Jeep Corporation . . ." plate on the passenger firewall are indications that it is a '69 and not a '70? The plate on the firewall says basically the same thing as the decal on the dash, minus the serial number and date of manufacture.

360577 was produced in August 69 and is registered as a 1970. Serial number for model year switch over is set by the manufacturer and it doesn't neccessarily have to fall on a certain date. Jeep also officially listed a serial number break that carry over vehicles could be registered as the next model year, and sometimes that extended pretty far back.

For what it's worth, the serial number chart below appears to indicate that in the 1965 to 1967 time frame during the Kaiser years, the break between model years was at or around the end of June / beginning of July:

I fully agree that the model year date / serial number change-over was set by the manufacturer, and was not consistent. If you look at the model year change time frames that are roughly indicated in the 1970-'71 and 1972-'75 databases for AMC Jeeps in that range, you can see that the '70's appeared to have shifted to '71's in August, but by 1974, the change-over date had slipped to September.

Maury, are you only collecting info on CJ5's for your database? I have a '75 CJ6 if you're interested in those as well.

Thanks again Maury, as you said, mine seems to fall in the range where it could go either way. At this point I'm thinking I'll leave it titled as a '70.

Thanks, but to date I've only made databases for the CJ-5's during the 1970-75 time frames. At this point I don't have anywhere close to the number of photos of CJ-6 decals I'd need to create meaningful VIN / Build Date databases for the 6's.

That's an interesting bit of data - may I ask where you got that info?

Any chance he would be willing to share it? It would be great if that data could be recorded someplace on this forum!

    I have a 1970 Jeep CJ 5 Renegade 1
It's got a couple data plates and the one that I am most curious about is the Kaiser order tag with #D-5090
    April 1970 Vin: 8305017 364978

The story I got with the Jeep was that it was in a Commerical of some sort and the original owner special ordered it. Apparently the Jeep was received by the dealer, then used in the Commerical and finally delivered to owner. The Jeep is out of CA. It also struggled to meet CA Emmisions and I have some paperwork on that.

Yes....if you take a look at the 1970-'71 VIN database linked to in the first post of this thread, you'll see images of that decal and several others that have build dates later than Feb of 1970, but are Kaiser Jeep marked.

Apparently, it took AMC a number of months to source their own (i.e. non-Kaiser) decals after closing the deal to purchase Jeep from Kaiser in Feb. 1970, and they simply continued to use Kaiser's pre-existing stock of decal material in the meantime.

Maury, FC TEX (Keith) may have been referring to me under one of my many screen names on different sites. I visited him at his home. First class guy, The hobby is lucky to have him.

The 65-67 Serial number data sheets you displayed were mine. Those 12 sheets, and about 500 others have been shared from time to time.
Inevitably, someone will disagree with the numbers, or claim that they somehow are entitled to the entire list. The biggest turnoff is a commercial business using it without permission. It took alot of time and money to assemble that information.

I assume you got that sheet from the Old Willys forum or the old 3Bpage. I sent that page to both Scramboleer and Derek.

Someday I may be in a good mood and publish the whole thing. Until then, it's just a reference to answer specific questions from time to time.

    Hi W2SNO,

Thanks very much for your post, and I've long wondered where that 1965-'67 Jeep Serial Number / Build Date chart originated. I'm not even sure now where I first came across it, but I'd thought it might be a factory document from the Kaiser days. Thank you for putting all that information together!! I'm sure it took a great deal of work to create that chart.

I've heard rumors for many years that "someone" has in fact been able to gather a significant amount of otherwise unknown data regarding the early Jeep serial numbers. It's fantastic just to know that this is actually true - and that all of this information wasn't lost to the ages!

It will be a huge and incredibly valuable gift to the vintage Jeep community if you ever decide to publish all the data you've collected. That said, I can certainly understand why you would be hesitant to do so, particularly given the all the effort and expense you've gone to in amassing and organizing it.

For the time being, may we occasionally ask you specific questions about VIN numbers vs. build dates?

    Thanks again, W2SNO -

    Maury

Now that's really interesting....so your Ren 1 built in April of '70 has a Kaiser-marked dash decal, but an AMC tailgate and badge.

Do you happen to know whether or not that tailgate badge is / was a factory-installed item?
