1970 134 Fhead Head Gasket Replacement

if it's the newer type fel-pro gasket blue teflon with steel ring . that's not needed . older paper with rings that stuff works good

 

I cant get the head off. tried tapping a bunch. its down tight. suggestions, before i wreck anything?

 

Never mind. I forgot about the bolts down in the carburetor hole that I remembered before I even started this job

 

None on the block or head.

 

Metal gasket. what type of gasket maker should i use? red, black, or spray on?

 

Should i drain the oil at this point?

 

The thermostat did not have a weep hole in it

 

You could drill a ⅛" hole on the flange.

 

Id just as soon buy a new one.

Ok...i put on a head gasket, change the thermostat with one that has a weephole, the water pump (the new one is under warrenty, im replacing it, whether i need to or not) and 7lb radiator cap. before i fire it up, what else can i do to prevent overheating again?

 

put water in it!

 

Put in an antifreeze mix. of at least 50/50 mix.
How cold do you get there at night?

 

Put in antifreeze, change the oil...what else?
Fire it up, then retourqe the bolts after it warms up

 

Radiator is brand new. i expect it to last longer than anything else.

 

In fact, no more than 50/50. It's protection qualities actually diminish as it goes beyond 50%

 

its been unseasonably warm, with temps in the low 40's.
after tonight though, the hammer drops. freezing temps for the next 5 months. I love WI weather. tonight will be the last night of me working comfortably in my unheated shop.
