Old gas stinks, but that jeep sure doesn't. Nice score.

new lines and wheel ends... this machine goes and stops...
rebuilt carb waiting for a tank of fuel to burn through..
current problem is tires are like driving on lumpy matzaballs..
horrible shaking and vibration at anything over 30 mph.
Opinions on tires..
current size is 215/85R16
not looking to lift of modify the suspension so i think I'm sticking with the size..
I have seen some nice commercial tread tires.. or even ribbed tires...
don't see the need for an all terrain.. am I making a mistake?
I think this truck needs a set of Michelins
Old Bias ply tires get flat spots in them. They probably feel like they are square and might be a bit square. Either run them to temperature several times and try and make em work or get radials and forget about those issues forever.
The tires on this guy are 20 year old retreads that sat flat in the garage since 1999. (Partially due to garage door height). They all hold air, but if I'm really going to drive this it needs new rubber.
Just having a hard time not buying knobby tires. I mean it's a Jeep, but this guy isn't leaving the hwy. vibration and wobble in a cab over is something I forgot about and don't want to experience again...
A mild all terrain tire would be perfect - give it good ride quality but still have some 4wd. I run the Hankook Dynapro ATM on my Tacoma - would be great on that truck! Lots of other similar options as well. I think Michelin makes something similar (they used to make a Dueler model). Firestone has the Destination models.
Guess it also depends on your use - but if its got a TC with front driveshaft and front differential, might has well have tires to suit.
went with some Goodyear DuraTracs...
size seemed to have been the biggest issue with availability...
need to get these swapped out before I start chasing down whatever is left in the suspension
new tires make this a 55 mph traveling machine..
Need to spend an hour or so on the directionals..
Once I burn through a tank of gas I'll put the rebuilt carb on and dial in the motor.
If I got serious it would need an overdrive...

First drivability issue...
accelerator pedal rotted out.. quick afternoon fix as a precursor to new floor pans...
Sparton will need to be addressed.. directional won't "lock" in place, needs to be held down..
and of course the fuel pump died the next day
Don't feel bad, my accelerator pump exploded inside the Rochester 2G on the 67 Commando for the third time last night. Leaving me with about 3/4 inch of throttle to work with while traveling.
Going to order a few pumps from quadrajetparts.com and try them since the accelerator pumps in the rebuild kits are poorly made having a terribly loose sloppy fit in the plunger. Didn't like the accelerator pump from the first moment I opened the carb rebuild kit.
I've rebuilt hundreds of carburetors over the years and NEVER had accelerator pump issues like this before.
Polish the accelerator pump well as nice as possible. I used rubbing compound then polishing compound. Get the garter spring style pump from quadrajet parts and install it. I had the same issues, going through other aftermarket pumps. I did this and have driven it with no issues for quite a while now.
Have put some miles on this baby.. blast to drive..
planning on swapping the carb tonight for a rebuilt unit...
other than dropping the tank, the fuel system should be fairly cleaned out by now..
still need to get it back up in the air for fresh fluids and brake adjustments..
OK, here's a kicker - been traveling with no accelerator pump. The carb unstuck it's own internal linkage explosion, so I am able to open the throttle. Don't miss the pump at all - no stumble, it just goes. No dead stomps, wouldn't even try, just normal steady upshifts are just fine without the pump. Not sure about that at all in the cold weather though. I have traveled 54 miles on 3.2 gallons of petrol, 46 miles of that highway at 60 MPH. So, with no accelerator pump, I am averaging almost 17 MPG! Almost makes that pump seem like an unwanted gas-sucking stepchild in hot weather. Wouldn't believe it unless I experienced it myself! Shocking but nice at the same time.
anybody know if the carb spacer on the 6-226 engines is stock?
cant find it in my parts book, but looks like everything is original under there, except the ill fitting oil bath cleaner..
1958 commute this morning in 2017 traffic...
took the back road obviously.. truck drives like a dream with the carb rebuild..
might need a heavier spring on the return.. idle is high..
anybody have any good links to tuning the carb on the 6-266?
Sa-weet! Not a big fan of the FCs, but I'm digging this truck.
My method has always been this:
1) Engine at full operating temperature, ignition timing at proper setting.
2) Connect RPM meter.
3) Turn idle mixture screw in until you see RPM drop/idle stumble.
4) Back idle mixture screw out 1/8 to 1/4 turn every 15 seconds or so watching for a rise in the RPMs.
5) If idle gets too high, back out the idle speed screw to drop the RPMs.
6) When no more rise in RPM can be attained backing out the idle mixture screw, turn it back in 1/4 to 1/2 turn and that's your setting.
took my first real road trip with Big Red...
drove down from Rochester and looped around Canandaigua lake..
had some stores/customers to visit and some stuff at the cottage to pick up...
Amazing how well this guy drives.. not setting any land speed records, but the power is there.. had no issues going up and down the hills. Tracked well, stops, and all gauge needles stayed right where they should.
I prob should address some of the cab rust, whack off the insanely heavy running boards, wire wheel and chassis coat the frame...
