My jeep stopped running. It had spark so I thought it would be a good time to do some preventative maintenance. I replaced the fuel (it had been in storage over the winter), the fuel filter, the fuel pump and the carb. I have a mechanical fuel pump so I will double check for a spacer. That sounds like it could be the issue in my case. Thanks!

I would drain the fuel bowl to get an idea of the float level setting. In other words is there just enough in the bottom to keep it running, or does it seem like enough to not have an issue. If it's getting too much gas it should start running rough and black smoke should be coming out of the exhaust.

If it was mine, I'd check the point gap and timing again before getting deep into guesswork.

Somehow locked out of my original account, so I re-joined.

In the meantime I ordered a pressure regulator as the jeep is blowing smoke out the exhaust. I'll let you know if that solves it for me

That would depend somewhat on what color the smoke is. Black would be fuel, blue is oil, white/gray is coolant.

I'm running a Solex on my CJ2A and have a Mr. Gasket fuel pressure regulator. I really need to put my fuel pressure gauge inline and see what it's actually putting out but I have the dial set to 1.5 lbs and it's fueling great.

Thanks Downs. I hope the Solex/regulator solves my problem.

I'm stumped in the meantime. I cleaned my Carter YF and put it back on while I wait for my regulator to arrive. Same symptoms, starts and will only run if I keep pumping the gas pedal to rev it, then eventually sputters out. Kinda hard to tell what color the smoke is, seems dark gray. I checked the bowl level after and it is about 1/2 full, not sure if that is just because of the displacement of the float.

Thanks all for your help and patience, I'm new to doing my own wrenching

That being the case, be aware that a logical diagnosis needs to begin from known base-lines. And a Factory Service Manual (not Haynes or other generic.)

Thus, a "by the book" tune up of points and timing, a good set of plugs properly gapped, a fresh condenser, distributor cap, and cap would be the place to start. Anything less and you'll be chasing your tail.

It is not difficult, just work step by step and be patient.

Good advice. In software development folks used to say 'RTFM' - Read The F*****g Manual
