Recapped Tires

A couple of days ago someone posted about a recap service located in Tennessee that offered something that looked like a narrow Terra tire. I found the business website, but lost the post on here. Any help on finding the original post? Thanks. Pat

 

Pat, the tires you described sound like the ones my dad had on his 3a back in the 60'-70'. I recall them being called Mini-Terra's.
That may not be correct but i'm sure someone on here has a better memory than I'. They were sold thru a local recap service in town here.They were popular and a economy alternate to the Formula Desert Dog tire that was all the rage. I ran Desert Dogs up front and Goodyear Terra Tires on 10" x15 wheels on the back w/a Lincoln Locker. No rocks just mud in those days. mike

 

Do you recall if they were street legal? That was the only drawback to the BIG TERRA's (31/15.50/15) if I remember right. If they are recaps, then maybe you could get them on full 4 ply or maybe even 6 ply casings so they could run in the rocks. I have a call into the recapper in Tennessee-we will see. Pat, you sure it was here? I searched for recap, retread and terra over the past month and found nothing.

 

Nope-not really sure where I saw it. I guess that is one of the signs that I am getting kinda old? Actually way old now. I will just keep looking and hope that whoever posted wherever will see this and repost it. Thanks for looking.

 

Pretty sure you're talking about www.tirerecappers.com That's the only place I can think of right off in Tennessee that does retreads. Another is Tread Wright but their tires are nearly the same or more expensive than brand new tires.

I'm not sure what tread pattern you are talking about though so not sure which ones to try to find on there.

 

Yep-that is the one. I was just thinking, since the tires I want are not made anymore maybe they could find me some casings that they could retread. I am thinking almost like 1 from column A and 1 from column B and then you could have the old school bias ply tire with the tread pattern you want. As far as the tread pattern I would like-either Gates Commando XT or Goodyear Terra Tire. We will see what they say about availability of the right size bias ply and tread availability.

 

Well-that was shot down real quick. The only casings they retread are radial and they only offer 2 standard tread patterns. Shucks!

 

Looking at their website i see quite a few different tread patterns. Not much savings over brand new tires though.

 

You're not saving much out of pocket but you're extending the life of a tire carcass before it ends up in a landfill and reducing the amount of oil used while supporting American workers.

I think its 22 gal vs 7 gal of oil (on average) for new vs retreaded. Which *almost* makes up for the oil drips on the driveway and low MPG.
