? 1/4 ton trailer No tail gate ?

Found an army jeep 1/4 ton trailer coming up for auction, will get a closer look next week. but it looked like someone may have cut the back out where the tail gate was to be, The ID tag was cut in half, trailer has the military style tail lights & hand break on it. Still see the faded U.S.Army on the side and it's faded drab green paint.
Was there a 1/4 ton trailer with out a tail gate/ boxed in?

IIRC none of the 1/4 ton military trailers had tailgates. They were designed to float during water crossings to keep the ammo dry.
