Ok my dana 18 has been getting worst since my windrock incident ,getting louder and leaking more  R) . The front yoke has gotten a little play in it now. So I figured I need to rebuild it ,but one of my buddies offered me a case so I wouldnt risk having my jeep apart when Uwharrie trip came up. Well he had a few to chose from so we took off the easiest one to get to and popped it off . All of them where on 60's model jeeps so I didnt even think about the shaft size after we got it out he remembered that tranny and case had came out of a 2a . So we checked the shaft size and sure enuff it was a 1 1/8 shaft . But the case looked really good the gears looked alot better then mine . So think Im going to run it, from what I remember theres no lost of strength just LONG term wear like 20,000 - 30,000 miles. Ive had my jeep for 3 years and havnt put 3000 miles on it so the milage durablity problem isnt to big of a concern R) R) . Or do yall think I should go and rebuild the 11/4 shaft case?

I don't know what your buddy is charging you for the other case but if it's cheap I would try running it. If and when it gives you any problem then I would rebuild the 1 1/4" case. At 1000 miles a years that could be a long time. At least that is what I would do.

Measure the input hole - there were big hole and small hole cases.

If Im looking at it right this case has a 3.125 hole , the 11/4 shaft case is still on the jeep. Whats the diff and which is better?

IIRC that's a small hole case, and the 1 1/4" cases came big and small hole. I'm guessing - if your 'case in the Jeep is original it's a small hole case and you'll be fine.

If it's a big hole case then you'd be switching from a big hole case to a small hole case and would need some other parts to make it work -- search the site on big hole small hole D18 and you'll find some posts with info.

IMHO if your two don't match I'd look for one that does -- less hassle.

Never found much diff in the strength between the 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 Tcases. IMO it's alot of 'noise' from folks thinking it makes a diff. The main issue is what Mike stated - Large hole vs Small hole for the inputs and what they mate up to and the 28 vs 26 tooth input gears for the Tcase. Make sure they match what you need.

The gear difference is that the old models were 2.43:1 while the later geared ones were 2.46:1.

Just to add to this old post; I have had both. I found no difference in strength or durability. The only thing that I believed (and this may not be correct, just my perception) is that the 1 1/4 pin case with the needle bearings was a little quieter than the 1 1/8 pin with the roller bearing / cage bearing arrangement. I would run either one of them with confidence though.
