It's not that bad of a job. Basically you are adding the relays to existing wiring. The wires that went to the headlights are what turns the relays on. So you can do the mod and leave it for when you rewire.

They are ceramic sockets, not housings. I know the ceramic sockets are available, and I would do it for peace of mind if I were going to use the 100W or 150W bulbs. The original plastic sockets are fine if you don't go wild with the bulbs.

I know that the street legal replacement bulbs are supposed to be compatible with the factory light switch, but the relay installation is really easy in a Jeep, and not very expensive. And you can reuse everything when you rewire.

At $27 each, I'd try the Autopals from the eBay link I listed above. They get a lot of positive comments on the forums. And you can choose E-code reflectors, which I expect you'd be happier with.

Uh guys you are thinking of HID lights, every darn new car built since around 1985 has come with Halogen headlights from the factory. They are a direct replacement bulbs for the original incandescents, no changes no nothing pull the old sealed bulb out and put the new one in.

Oh and the Silverstars in your XJ are definitely halogen bulbs!!

I installed Hella e-code reflectors and H4 60/55 bulbs in the LJ, with no change to wiring. Significant improvement over stock in the LJ... I like the flat low-beam cutoff and the extra light to the right.
I used to run sealed halogens in the CJ, and if I still had the CJ I would definitely install the Hella e-code reflectors with H4 bulbs.

Yeah, don't know what I was thinking when I typed that. The HID's are the ones I was thinking about. Matter of fact, I'm to young to remember anything but halogens! LOL

OK...so I'm definitely going E-code halogen, along with relays, but I'm not sure about Cibie vs Hella. Everyone swears by the Cibies, and a lot of ppl love the Hellas as well, but I've read about problems aiming both the high and low beams on the Hellas because they're angled so far apart. Can anyone enlighten me on this? The Hellas are a lot cheaper.

And bulb recommendations? I'm buying most of it off of Daniel Stern Lighting I think, but I'm not sure about what to get. I've read that going E-code gives you some more leeway with wattage because they're not as bad for oncoming drivers...

This is where I got the 7" e-codes for my LJ
    Susquehanna Motorsports
    http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=739

    They also sell through Amazon.

I just went with the H4 halogen 60/55 bulb.
Been on the LJ for a year now, and I'm very pleased with the result... even without the wiring harness upgrade (I'll do that sometime in the future).
