Hey guys, I am going to replace my rear mount gas tank on my 74 CJ5 due to a small hole. I can get a new one cheaper than it can be repaired profesionally.

I want to move the filler to the passenger side instead of the passenger rear when I install the new one. Would I be beeter off buying the tank for a newer CJ or replacing with the 74 style? Does it matter in regards to the tank? I figure the hoses would be different as they are going in a different direction, and the old ones are shot anyways. Thanks for any advice guys.

May I ask, why? Do you have the hard parts for the filler (ie the vent connection and the filler neck)? The rubber parts for the rear fill are available. I replaced the fill hose on mine, and it fit good.

A newer tank offers no distinct advantage if you want to move the location of the filler neck. The 74 model tank can be had very cheaply, I got a new one on Ebay for $90 earlier this year. Looked exactly the same in terms of quality as the original and the mounting holes matched perfectly. You'll have to change the mounts if you go with a newer tank as they used a strap instead of bolting to the frame the way the 74 did.

Thanks, I was just curious if there was an advantage to one over the other. I will just replace with the 74 type and move fill.

A couple of observations when I replaced my rusted steel tank in my 73 with a plastic one from MTS:
The MTS tank mounts similar to the later model ones using straps. I wasn't all that keen on drilling holes in my original 73 skid plate in good condition to mount the straps, but it turned out well.
The vent hose that MTS sells doesn't seem to work with their plastic tank (odd). It works with the steel tanks which have the long vent nipple. The vent hose is the right shape for the vent on either tank, but the tail is not long enough to reach the short nipple on the plastic tank. I used the later vent and twisted it into position.
