I have a line on a roll bar w/ windshield hoop about an hour away from my house. It is out of a CJ7 and I have a CJ5. Does anyone know how much trouble it would be to modify this to fit? Is it too long? Is it too wide? Both? Will it drop right in? Just wondering if i need to keep looking?

    Thank you,

It will need modification on at least the windshield angle dimension probably...depends on the year of your 5. I think height and width should be okay. Can you get some measurements before heading out?

    Yes,

I have access to my 75 CJ5..... The CJ7 is a 78..... I will take some measurements before I go..... I figured it may need to be shortened?

The width will be ok. The bars from the rear bar to the front hoop will be too long, since the CJ-7 is 10" longer than the CJ-5. Some CJ-7 bars go to the floor behind the front seat - if so, the hoop going to the floor will have to be cut off and modified to sit on top of the rear wheelhouses.

As mentioned, the tilt-back on the CJ-7 windshield is steeper than the early CJ-5. If your CJ-5 is '76 or later, it will match, but an earlier model will have a more upright windshield.

So plenty to change. If you are a good welder, you can make it fit, especially if you have a '76 or later CJ. in a '75, I expect the front hoop will be a long ways from the windshield. I'd pass.

    Tim,

Thank you for your response. This person had the same setup for a CJ5 but it has sold. He says he has something that might fit. I was just curious as to what to look for. He has several CJ's so I will make the trip to see....

Today I made the trip to look at a roll bar for my CJ5..... I picked up an one that was in great condition.... I got home and it fits perfect....(it does not have the windshield hoop)... All I need to do is bolt it in.... my question now is what size bolts should I use? I went and looked at some grade 8 bolts... I was thinking about getting 3/8's but they looked so small... I was also leaning toward putting a backer plate on the bottom side of the fender well.... is this required or will fender washers be fine?

    Just wondering

I'll be putting a backer plate on mine. Just to be sure that nothing rips through the body in case it does roll. I'm not confident that fender washers would do the trick.

put plates on the underside that are differant sizes than the plate/mount on top.......if they're the same size it will act as a shear and pull easily in a roll......3/8-1/2" should be fine
