Can this be done? How do I know what years it was made for? The PO said it came off of a 50's model CJ2. There seems to be a small strip of sheet metal bolted to the front of the roof where it meets the windshield frame.

A CJ-2A top would not fit your Jeep. It has to be specifically for the CJ-5, from 1955 through 1975. Since your Jeep is a MCMLXXIV model, it was likely sold with the Jeep. Does your windshield have latches or plates? If the Jeep came with the top from the factory, it would have plates. Otherwise, latches.

It has the standard latches. It has a grayish looking strip of sheet metal bolted to the roof. Not really sure what thats about. The windshield is original so it's not a top for the 76+ models.

Yes, it came from the factory with no top. Most Meyer hard tops were installed by dealers though at delivery time though. The factory hard top is unusual.

Well, the later top won't fit either, because the '76 and later windshield leans back more, and the sides tilt in (trapezoid shape). There are filler strips at the edges and the lid overall length is shorter. I expect the door angle is different too. Maybe you could post a pic of the metal strip?

Does your top have a label in the inside rear corner? If so, it should have the AMC logo if contemporary with your Jeep.

    hey tim...

is this sticker date-able on a cj6 top? (dont tell me its as easy at the '67' on the end.... ;)
the cj6 is a 1973, but did not come with this top....

the previous owner changed the dash and made his own... i assumed he made the plates, but did the factory plates look anything like this?

here is the rest of the top

one last question... i have seen a cj6 top with an extra side window, and 3 windows across the back..

is this a different option? a different year? a different country?

    any info would be appreciated..

2 things: Love teh Meyer sticker, and are those the windshield plates that would come with a factory hardtop you where referring to, Tim?

That 6 looks to be in great shape!

    Yes, factory hard top plates.

The sticker looks like 60s era. A label from the '70s has the AMC logo and more modern script. No change in design otherwise, AFAIK.

I think the 'deluxe' top had the extra side and back windows. That Jeep is a '76 or later export CJ-6.

Ok, so here are a few pics of the metal strip. It seems that the windshield isn't tall enough for the roof to bolt into and the PO used the strip to fill the gap. Why would there be a gap there?

That top is for a later year CJ5, the side filler strips match the one I have. Those are the same kind on the green '76 CJ6 above. If it was an earlier top it would have the filler pieces on the blue with white top CJ6 above in the photos (above the green one).

I'm guessing the filler piece above the windshiled is needed cuz the soft tip lip will not let the hard top come down low enough in front. The front edge of your top should come down to meet almost right above the windshield rubber gasket. You can push an earlier windshiled back near anough to fit the shorter top on the later hard tops, almost close enough, hence another reason for needing the filler piece.

My '67 has a later top on it, plus a later windshield, this photo shows how the top should be down close to the gasket, no need for a filler strip. i realize my windshield is different than yours.

Well s**t! I guess it's going back on the market then. I'm not gonna get rid of the factory windshield to make the top fit.

I used a YJ windshield, wipers at the bottom, wiper motor on the inside. However, I have to re-invent my defrost ducting. Parts swapping ain't all it's cracked up to be.

I'm looking into purchasing a Meyer top for my 74CJ5. The top in question is supposedly from the 60s. Will it fit on my 74CJ5?
