    hey guys

it's been awhile since a painted a car. i painted my 62 cj5 this morning and made a rookie mistake. i put on first coat on way too thick and i have several major runs now. i'm wondering for those of you who might know, how long should i wait to sand down and repaint the panels??

(paint: ppg mtx. 4 coats single stage. red) i'm not gonna try and wetsand and buff them out. being single stage paint and i dont have a buffer anyway.

I'd do it today, as the rest of the paint you mixed is going to go bad soon.

I presume you used a catalyzed (2K) product?

I suggest you shave off the runs with a razor blade. This is a standard technique - there's even a tool that resembles a tiny block plane to shave off the runs. Then sand and recoat. Follow the directions on the product you used for how long you have to wait until you can sand. Likely there is a window where you're ok to sand and can still recoat. If you wait too long, you'll have to sand everything for the new coat of paint to stick.

my paint is not pre mixed so i can repaint whenever. i saw the razor blade thing online elsewhere. i'll give it a try. i really want to know how long i have to wait to sand then paint. there are no specs online or anywhere about that. from what i've read i should DA it w/320 then repaint. just not sure, wait 24 hours, 48, 3 days, a week?

well, i waited a day and a half. sanded down the panels and repainted them. i couldn't wait any longer. i'm sure the paint wasn't completely dry as it takes a few weeks, but i went ahead and it looks good and was well worth it. thanks for the help.

Sounds like you got it ok. I know some paint takes 30 days to fully cure and does not recommend any color sanding and buffing until then.

Just a FYI, you can use the sticky side of masking tape to pull the excess paint off a run IF you do it while the paint is still wet. It takes a little finesse but it looks a LOT better than a waterfall of paint. Tends to leave some orange peel but it will level out eventually.
