I am almost finished with a body off restoration of a 74 cj5 with 304 and t15 trans. While the body was off , I removed the top of trans to get some slop out of shifter, I just cranked the motor for the first time in 6 months and it seems my shift pattern is backwards; from neutral over to right and forward is reverse, first is straight back, shouldn't it be otherwise? If so, what have i done wrong?

If you are moving the gears by hand, the movement is backwards from the shift lever directions. Think about it - the lever has a pivot in the middle that reverses the direction of the movement.

I was sitting in jeep with motor running, rear tires off, on blocks, I put it in what i thought was reverse and wheels spun forward: I have removed shift cover and think I have installed shifting forks backwards, I don't understand why that would change shift pattern. But boy is this fun. I am going to be sorry when this thing gets going, guess I'll find something else to tinker with.

Reverse is definitely to the left and forward. Make sure the forks fit over the collars properly when you put the shift top on.

Okay, I've just reassembled shift cover and reverse is right and forward, and 2nd is left and forward. I printed a copy of fsm from tom collins web site and it looks to me like it is assembled correctly.
If I have the shafts reversed in the shift cover could it reverse the shift pattern?

Forks reversed, maybe. Did you take the top cover apart?

If you put the R-1 fork on the 2-3 shaft and vice-versa, that would do it. Or if you reversed the forks and shafts complete.

I took it apart again and put it back togeather with the shafts reversed from what the picture indicates on page 6-8 of the tom collins service manual and it works now. thanks for the help, this is a great site. I wouldn't have attempted a body off restoration if I hadn't found this site. One more question, there are two electric switches on the rear of the shift cover, One is for reverse lights, what is the other for? thanks again, Kirk

The other switch on the t15 I had made contact only in 3rd gear. It was conected to a vacuum booster inline with the EGR valve. This was on a Ca vehicle, so it may have other uses in other states.
