    Hello all,
New here so probably asking a question already asked.
Working on the brakes for a 1967 CJ-5, and after removing the right front lock out, oil ran out from between the Universal Joint Shaft and the Spindle.
Is this normal? Left front was good with no oil running and old grease (Repacked now). Right Front had no grease just oil everwhere except inside on the brakes and drum, these are dry.
Maybe the grease melted into oil?
Wondering if a oil seal has failed in this assembly somewhere?
    Thanks for any information.

    inner oil seal?
i asked about it too during my rebuild.
i ended up replacing the outer seal but didnt bother with the inner ones(labor intensive)
they told me here not to worry about oil mixing with my newly grease packed bearings.

Thanks for the inner oils seal info. I am looking at the front axle diagram and not sure what you mean by inner and outer seals?
One seal is behind the wheel bearing cup, up against the spindle. Looks like there are two inside the front axle housing serving each axle, and on on the front towards the transfer case, by the universal joint yoke.
Want to keep the diff. oil from leaking out the lock outs?

The inner oil seals he is referring to are behind the carrier bearing races. to change them you have to pull both axles and the differential. when you remove the bearing caps make sure you replace them exactly how the came off. The seals are difficult to replace (hard to drive in). I rigged up a tool out of thread all and a couple of race drivers.

The hub seals usually do not do well with 75-90 diff oil and most often, it goes right through and eventually wets down the brakes. You can leave the level in the diff down about 3/4" which helps some but it will still be a problem if you do off-camber trails. Most definately do not fill above the bottom of the plug.

You should drain and clean out the knuckle as it will also be full of diff lube, refill with knuckle pudding (search here or 3B page). Not sure I have ever experienced inner seals that actually worked on D25/D27 axles.

Thanks every one for the information.
Walcks said this is normal for diff. oil to come out of the axles, like i described above.
Still will check all the seals. Want to do this once only.

Whoever told you that at Walcks is wrong. I've never had oil come out of the hubs as you described. I've had several D27 equiped Jeeps. I have however replaced the inner seals on three different D27's and D30's. If you really want to do it right, pull the carrier and replace the seals. But, here's the caveat, if you are going to go that far into it you might as well do the knuckle seals, re-pack the wheel bearings and replace the grease seal that goes in the hub and at least check the kingpin bearings for wear. Inspect the brakes while you are at it. I vote do it all once and be done with it. If not you'll surely be back to do it later. In the last month or so I posted a pic of the seal install tool I fabbed. I just can't remember which thread it was and I deleted the pic from my computer. If you do a search for "D27 inner oil seal" you may be able to find it.
