I have a 74 cj5 with an overhauled 304, new 195 thermostat, water pump new with the rebuild, new radiator and shroud, the fan clutch is original, and lastly timed at 5 degrees BTDC. The gauge reads 210 degrees when up to temp, you can watch it go to 210 at start up drop to 195 and go back up to 210 and stay. I hit it with the IR gun the engine is 210 the top hose 180's and the bottom hose 140's. Would anyone care to share whether or not this is operating in a safe range? Or am I chasing a non-issue?

    Thanks,
    Maverick

How many miles since the overhaul? They'll run hot after a rebuild, before it's broke in..

I think it's non-issue and you have an active thermostat.
and a very reactive gauge to that reading.

With a lower rad hose temp of 140 he is getting adequate cooling. Make sure the pressure cap is working and run it.

All normal. 210 was always the normal temp on my 4.0L XJ

You are getting the correct temp water past the thermostat.
You would think they would place the temp pickup so that it is near the hottest spot on the water jacket.

It is good insurance to have a new fan clutch, but you should not neccesarily expect a drop in gauge temps if you do install one. Lower radiator hose temps, and reserve cooling capacity would probably benefit, though.

Where is the temp sensor plumbed. Mine is on the drivers side towards the rear of the block and I run about 205 -210 all the time. I hit it with the infrared gun though and the temp at the thermostat is right at 185. If this is where yours is run, I would not worry.

210 is acceptable but if it bothers you switch to a cooler thermostat.

The temp on my 360 is at least 210 usually hotter. It ran even hotter when I had a cooler thermostat in it. I'm also runing 538 gears which doesn't help on the freeway.

I'll take a look to see what radiator I have, I ordered it for a cj with a 304.
