    hey guys

the starter went out on my 62 cj5 f head 134. i tried the toyota landcruiser starter that some people talked about, and it did not work. when power is connected, the starter just spins, and does not engage the flywheel. where can i get an new or rebuilt starter. the only place i see, is kaiser willys, where a new one is $330 or you send your old one in and they rebuild for $215. that seems crazy. any ideas where to look??

    thanks!

Look locally for a starter/alternator shop. There is one near me that rebuilt ours for $45-$55. This shop had a one day turn on rebuilding as well.

You might also talk to shops that work on forklifts and see if they know anyone locally that rebuilds forklift starters. I had non-stop problems with the starter in my then new Nissan V-6 and couldn't even buy a starter from Nissan at that time but my mechanic had a friend that worked on Nissan Forklifts. He took my starter and rebuild it with much stronger forklift parts and it worked perfectly and I NEVER had any further problems with it even though I kept it another 12 years.

Where are you located? I know someone locally (central Fla) that has piles of spare parts.

PS have you tried taking the starter out and cleaning and lubricating it??? That's probably all that's wrong with it. I don't think that's covered in the civilian Jeep SM but the military manuals probably do.

Is the Toyota starter pinion the same size as the original? On my L-head the Toyota was too small in diameter. It was supposed to work on the F-head though. I think Walck's has rebuilt starters for $200 or so with your core. I've had 2 rebuilt by local shops with little luck at about $100 each. If you look around you can find complete Jeeps for $500 or so.

i wonder what the difference is between your f134 and mine?
the toy starter bolted right up and works great.

Yeah, I'd put a little more effort into sorting the problem with the Toyota starter. Several members here have used this part successfully.

for you guys that have used the toy starter, did u have to drill out the mounting holes on the starter to mount it? i had to with mine, it didn't bolt right up. lining up the holes were off like an 1/8th to a 1/4".

i checked the toyota starter compared to the original one that went out. because the toyota starter did not engage the flywheel i suspected the starter gear was too far away from the flywheel. holding a straight-edge ruler to the flat inside edge of where the gear comes out and spins, the angles between the two in relation to the mounting holes do not match at all. the design setup of the toyta starter puts the starter's gear too far away. and noting that my flywheel is in perfect condition, in my opinion, that starter does not work on the stock f 134 engine. a waste of $60.

i am quoting myself from my write up.
    :

You can use a starter from a 1964 thru 1983 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2L. Nippondenso Part number 02800-2362/4.
O'reillys Auto Parts sells it under Ultima Part # 16224
You can also find it under a Lester rebuilt # 16224
Or you can find it under an ACE rebuilt # 649

i am having to enlarge the bolt holes on the new starter.
and you need to make the top one an oval.
it's an aluminum case so it's not a big deal.

    update;
    it works a treat!
there is an extra green wire with a female connection coming out of the new starter that we dont use.
tape it off because it is hot when the key is on.

Man, the toyota starter worked like a champ on my 62 F head. It was too easy...but I did have the fender off and the transmission covers off:)

Then I submit that you did not get the correct starter. Rock Auto has them. The one for the 64 to 78 Landcuiser with the six. Not the one for the pickup, cause it is different.
