Just purchased 69 Jeepster that had been sitting up for 6 years because the driver side rear axle slid out. It has the tapered axle with the keyed hub. I am trying to figure out what all I need to purchase to repair. The PO said the Dana 44 axle was new when installed but thought the wrong bearing was installed. I am beginning to think it was just installed wrong. Looking at old diagrams, it appears the Race for the bearing was installed backwards. It is still in the axle tube with the axle out. There is no bearing on the axle or bearing retainer plate(long gone i guess after it came off). My question is what is the sequence of putting everything back together and what parts I need.

Is this the sequence of installation?
    1. Install Oil seal
    2. Press Bearing onto axle shaft with small diameter of bearing to outside
    3. Install axle shaft
    4. slip race over axle shaft and into axle tube (and over bearing)
    5. Install shims and bearing retainer plate
    6. Install rear wheel backing plate
    7. Install hub, key and cap nut

    I need to purchase:
    - oil seal
    - Bearing and race
    - bearing retainer plate

Do I need any other gaskets or grease retaining plates?

I am new to Jeepsters and know nothing about the Dana 44 rear axles. Thanks for any help

Quick look in the manual and that sounds right. Are you sure it's a D44? 30's were more common. Not saying it isn't as there were tapered 44's used in Jeepsters but they're kind of rare. Here's an ID chart-Differential ID

Thanks for the reply. Yes, checking by the Chart it is a Dana 44. I have the Dauntless 225 v6 which according to what I have read is normally matched up with the Dana 44.

Up until 69 the D30 rear was the only rear diff available. Then they got smart some time in early 70 and went D44 flanged in all of them.
