    Hi guys (and gals)!

So I'm pulling off the jammed front wheel of the family project CJ5A and stuff begins to issue forth ...

The insides seem surprisingly bare ...

    and then I see why
    [IMG]

    Anyone else have this happen?

I've seem my share of used up shoes, but this is my first time opening up a drum on a jeep put up wet for a decade (or any jeep, for that matter). I suspect there is a cylinder rebuild in my future.

(If there are any image problems, I apologize... first time using Picassa.)

    ----------------
'64 CJ5A. Pieces of one, anyway.

Unbolt that whole backing plate and throw it in the recycle bin....buy 11 inch brakes and bolt them up on both sides

Good suggestion. A very popular and cost-effective upgrade. Bendix 11" brake parts are cheap and available everywhere. Can be done as a junkyard project, or complete kits are available.

Likely you had bonded linings that were soaked in brake fluid and grease, and they came apart.

You will spend more rebuilding the 9" brakes than you will have in upgrading to 11". I wish I would have found this out before I rebuilt the 9" on our JEEP. Unless you are going for a complete correct restoration.

Whats a good source for and 11in kit? The parts don't have to be "new".

R+P has kits as well as other vendors. They usually come with all new parts and reconditioned backing plates

I have used several of R&P's Brake Kits. I like them alot and it saves me tons of time, for me a key point.

Looks like the wheel cylinder is shot in that first pic. Once the linings get drenched in brake fluid they deteriorate rapidly.
