Curious to see if anyone has installed a tuffy center console in their rig. I'm looking to go with something along the lines of what is linked below, pending gap between seats, and just wanted to see how intensive the install is. I know there is modifications that have to be done to the bracket and I'll probably run spacers on the drivers side since there is more gap there than the passengers. Any info/pics would be great.

I've researched the same one...although I haven't purchased one yet, and most of the things I've read are positive. I think the only negative was that an older version had the locking mechanism exposed to moisture so you had to be careful to lubricate often. I read that the fit and finish in a CJ is good, with very few mods...as you've already noted.

I was looking at this one more because of the stereo option, but after some measurements i would need to cut it more for my cd player to fit. Got one of those water proof boat ones and don't wanna put it under the dash. Waiting to hear back from the company on if it is recessed in the stereo compartment. If not there is no way to fit it without cutting into the lock portion.

Just ordered a delux unit, should be here Friday (4 Dec). I'll let you know how it installs. It's going into a 1974 CJ5 3-Speed. I ordered the delux unit because I want to install the nice radio in it and leave the not-so-nice one in the dash. Have to give something for the local thugs grab...

Sure! You have to host them elsewhere, like Photobucket, then put the links here. Looking forward to it myself.

Thanks for the hint on the photobucket. In the middle of building a web page and I am planning on area for my project (CJ5) that would be open to the public.

As for size I picked the delux console -
    SPECIFICATIONS:
    Part #013,
Exterior Dimensions: 24”L (includes cup holder), 8”W, 18 1/2”H (includes 4” mounting bracket), 3 1/2” Holes for drinks
Interior Dimensions: Rear Compartment: (Length is Tapered) 12”L (top) 16”L (bottom), 7 1/2”W, 12”H Stereo Compartment: (All sizes) Comes pre-cut for DIN Mount stereo 2 1/8”L, 7 1/4”W, 7” Depth, 67 Degree Angle (Stereo Not Included)

    Fits:
    CJ-5 up to 75**

** = Product will mount if sufficient space exists, additional hardware provided by customer or modifications to hardware may be required

:smash: It's the additional and/or modifications to hardware may be required by customer that I am interested in.

Well, it's Sunday. Time to get some coffee and get to work.

Done ! Took about two hours (hey, I'm old). Still need to move the Driver's seat belt and get the plumber's tape to complete the mounting of the front end of the console.
    So lets start.

    Step1
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step1.gif

Start from the Passenger side of the Jeep.

    Step2
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step2.gif

Put the console where you THINK it will go

    Step3
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step3.gif

It will fit. Just needs a couple of mods :smash:

    Step4
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step4.gif

Pull the Passenger seat and relocate the Driver's seat belt (at least for my CJ)

    Step5
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step5.gif

Pre-postion the console and look for possible issues. The cup holder has to be mounted on the lowest mounting position if I still want to shift and use my favorite coffee mug. You could mount it in the back, but it didn't work for me.

First real issue. The forward mount is about 4 inches back from the Driver's forward seat rail. I didn't have any plumber's tape (flexable metal band with multiple holes) to solve the issue, but will have some later. Photos to follow.

    Step6
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step6.gif
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step6_B.gif
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step6_C.gif

You can see from the above photos that I can't use the normal method of mounting. By using plumber's tape wrapped around the Driver's forward seat rail and bolted to the front of the console the issue can be solved. I plan on placing some kind of bumper material on the front rail to prevent vibration noise. I might even build a sleeve for the normal forward mount and use a longer bolt to secure it all, in addition to the tape.
Also, watch where you drill! I didn't have any issues, but be careful just the same.

    Step7
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step7.gif
    http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/fitzpgl/Step8.gif

    Installed!

Note: The radio lid if left open will hamper shifting. Again, I mounted the cup holder using the last mounting holes so I could use my "favorite" coffee mug. I still need to mount the radio, but I don't see any problems there (famous last words). When I finish the radio I'll post those photos as well.

All-in-all, Tuffy came through. This had to be the easiest installation I have had next to replacing a light bulb. Hope this helps those of you looking at the Tuffy console.

How does thing actually secured to the Jeep ? I see a lot of space beneath with no bolts.

EDIT, I found out. Three bolts thru the floor.
