Jeep radio

My Jeep currently has no radio (and has never had one). I will NOT cut a hole in my un-molested dash to put one in, and I don't care for a big full size radio hanging under the dash. I was thinking of something like this-

Interesting solution. Review are all over the place.

I would not buy it based on the amplifier specification of 10% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). That is really crappy. For example a typical car stereo would be about 1% THD; home receiver/component 0.1% & pricey home units 0.02% THD or less.

 

Why not just an ok 100watt amp with high level inputs and plug in an MP3 player or portable CD player to it. Then a couple of speakers.
Thats my plan. Just with a bigger amp because well if it is worth doing it worth overdoing. Especially when you have a spare 800watt amp sitting in your room.

 

That's exactly what I did. Amp is under the passenger seat; the speakers are under the dash in one of those pod things - can't see them unless you are looking under there. I just plug in an MP3 player, and I have music. The system works okay, and keeps the dash from being cut. I think a regular head unit would be more convenient, but I would never actually install one due to the cutting on the dash that would be required.

 

That system looks cool. I'm with you guys, i don't want to cut anything and I don't want my jeep looking like some newly minted 16 year old drives it. My question is, won't those little speakers sound like an alarm clock? Where would you mount it so you could see what channel you were on if using FM and how do the controls work?

I think a little control unit with a screen like those older Sirius receivers to run a system like this would work well if you mounted it next to say the heater controls under the dash. It wouldn't take away from the jeep

 

there was a how-to artical in JP mag a few months back. thats what i plan to do since i only losten to my ipod in the tacoma and i always have my iphone on me.

Well, I dont know squat about audio equipment, but that doesn't sound good. (no pun intended!)
Does anyone know of any other similar options that include a radio?

 

I put mine in the glove box, and made kick panels to put 6x9's in them. It's not real high tech but it works. it is a cassette so I just bought an adapter and plug my phone or I pod into it.

 

What is this "Ipod" thing of which you speak ?

Some more new technology they've come out with now? bunny with a pancake

Expensive option-

There is plenty of room to mount a head unit behind the glove box. This would give you storage, plus the opportunity to access it to plug in your mp3 device or a portable satellite receiver (that's what I use).

Tucked up out of the way from thieves and weather.

A wired remote for marine applications controls the unit and has a display to let you monitor band, volume, input, etc.

Enclosed speakers under the dash facing downward.

El Cheapo-

Walkman. Remember these? AM/FM tuner with cassette or CD player.
12 volt computer speakers.
Wires and stuff.

Hard mount and wire the speakers under the dash. Pull out and extend the power and volume controls to a convenient spot. Plug the Walkman into the speakers. Enjoy your buttery beats.
