It’s a 327, we traced the date code to a ’65 passenger car / truck engine.
But 750cfm Holley DP, is that what you’re running? That’s a huge carb for a 327.

Yes, it has a 750 holley DP on it. Im pretty excited today! after finding the float stuck, I played with the timing without a light, and found a good spot. It don't ping anymore, or cut out, or sputter. runs better than it ever has. This morning my neighbor brought his timing light over, and I just wanted to see where it was at. It is dead on 16 degree BTDC. That sounds high to me from what all I have read lately. What do you think?? I am afraid to change it though. when I rev it up to wach my advance curve it sounds smooth. I cant tell what my total timing is, no way for me to measure it, but it about 3 inches from the timing tag. Its just about there! you guys have been a great help.(you dont even know)

If you’ve got a consistent idle and your starter can spin the motor I’d leave the timing right there. 16*BTDC isn’t far off where my idle timing is set.

Al long as it isnt pinging on acceleration, or other strange things, leave it alone.

Carb a 4779? I was using one of those on the 381 for a while-even too big for it. Replaced it with a 650 version and much better performance, but still left a lot to be desired off road. I think even a 500 cfm would be fine on a 327, unless perhaps you have one that will twist to 10k. The end pivot bowls on those double pumpers are -well, totally miserable off road. Even with spring loaded seats, whistle tubes, foam baffels, and extended vents, it is just about impossible to control fuel levels in the bowls when at extreme angles. A TA series will work much better on there.

I agree. A 650cfm vacuum secondary with center hung floats will work much better and have better low end torque.

From what I have read in the mags, I agree. I hear that a Q-jet is really good at angles, I will probably get rid of the double pumper. I PO used to sand drag it, and Im not trying to make a race car, so it will probably get rid of it. need to adress some issues with the shocks before off roading. The shocks are dented where they have hit the steering stop bolt on the axle(geuss thats what u call it). Im thinking of puting the drivers spring plate on the passenger side and visa versa with the 80's upper shock mounts and that will put the shocks behind the axle and away from that bolt. what do you think?? Bad idea or not? or should that be another thread for later.
