i am going to reinstall my roll bar for one reason only.
when i get elected mayor/pope/king daddy
i will need something to hang on to while i am standing in the back of the slug waving to my adoring crowds during my inaugural parade.

Mine will go back on after fresh paint - when I'm hurtling down the highway at a mind-numbing speed of 55 I feel a bit safer with it on. I also like loud pipes on my Harley so that ladies doing their makeup while talking on their cell realize I'm flying by. All us old guys need every edge we can get...

your post got me thinking about something.
in the almost 7000 miles i have driven the slug.
maybe 40 of them were on the highway.

    life in the slow lane.

Depends on the jeep. The Jalopy has one and it looks good with it. On the other hand, my restored 3A (same exact body style) looks like crap with it.

If you have a rollbar, you can put your Jeep in low range, then sit on the rollbar & steer with your feet!
Not that I would advocate such reckless behavior...:)

I've got a 74 CJ ,, When I bought it the PO put bondo on the angle at the very bottom of the roll bar ,,, After a screw driver & a hammer I found out why ,, the top of the side seat was rusted out bad,, if she would have rolled ,, the roll bar would have hit the driver for sure,,, I left the steel hard top on till I could attach the roll bar to the frame,, The rest of the body fell off due to rust so Im in the middle of fitting a 3B body to the CJs frame & it will have a roll cage ,,,I plan on using it as my daily driver 25 miles each way to & from work..:flag:

That does look SWEEEEET....but all due respect, a CJ6 has GOT to feel more stable than a 5 on the squirly trail. :driving:

Honestly I LOVE the look of any jeep with the windshield down and no roll bar, the lines simply look correct. However after trying to drive in this configuration and being pulled over (even though the Illinois state laws do NOT require the use of the windshield only that one be equipped to the vehicle) I decided I will never drive with the windshield down. So that being said I think the roll bar looks good with the windshield up and I re-installed mine after painting it black.

However when I take the Jeep to reenactments (not as a military jeep) the roll bar comes off and fender seating gets installed to drive my buddies around the camp with.

You got pulled over for driving with the windshield down? I used to drive my 77 around town in Springfield with the windshield down all the time and never had any problem. There's also a guy here who drives his restored CJ3A like that all the time. Maybe the cops up north are just worse than the ones we have down here. Even at around 40 I never had a problem with the windshield being down.

Yep I have been pulled over several times becuase the windshield is down. However each time I was never given a ticket becuase I pulled out a copy of the Illinois state law road book and have the page that addresses windshields.

The law states that a vehicle must be equipped with a windshield and rearward facing mirrors. NOTHING else is stated past that. After I present this to the officers they always say they have to talk with the higher ups and always give me a written warning so they dont look stupid but have never given me a ticket because they cant!

The last written warning I got had this in on the bottom as Reason for Warning it says "Defective/ No Windshield"

Yeah clearly my vehicle does not have a windshield and is defective. The cop that pulled my over looked like a dunce and Im fairly certain was in my graduating class in highschool.

Here is the section from Illinois States vehicle law book

"Every motor vehicle operated upon the highways of this
State shall be equipped with a front windshield which complies with
those standards as established pursuant to this Section and Section
12-503 of this Code. This subsection shall not apply to motor vehicles
designed and used exclusively for off-highway use, motorcycles,
motor-driven cycles, motorized pedalcycles, nor to motor vehicles
registered as antique vehicles when the original design of such vehicles
    did not include front windshields."

It must simply be Equipped, and a windshiled placed in a downward position on a vehicle designed to do that is still equipped as it is still attached in a fashion as designed from the factory.

Unfortunately, they figured out that loophole here in NY; and they added the following after the "equipped" language, "in a fixed and more or less upright position". :( Dagnabbit...was hoping to use the "equipped" thing if/when I get pulled over this summer cruisin to the beach...
