My '72 came with what I believe is an add-on roll bar and I'm debating taking it off because I like the look. What's your vote?

Personally I like the idea of the roll bar just in case things go turtle.

For one that I want original, eary cj5 or 2A etc. They are ugly and I don't have one but drive accordingly. For a later Jeep that is more roadable and will be used regularly I wouldn't go without one, and I'd add a front hoop and make it a cage.

I'd keep it. It really is a huge safety upgrade.

I wonder what happend to that old thread we had here with pictures of accidents with and without rollbars. If you saw that, you wouldn't even need to ask this question.

I will however say that jeeps look good without them.

It's a matter of function over form. I wouldn't drive a CJ5 without a rollbar even to the corner for a gallon of milk. If you restrict it to parade duty once a year driving 5mph or less, then sure, take it out. But never on a vehicle that sees highway use or any serious offroad use. Why take the risk just for looks? I know a lot of neighbors who have had lost family members due to tractor accidents and 99% of them were because the tractor lacked ROPS and rolled on top of them. If you can roll a tractor in a field going 1mph, you can roll a Jeep anywhere.

thats how i feel about motorcycles.
    5 buddies dead so far.

i have to take the rollbar off to remove the 1/2 cab.
i will probably put the bar back on before too long.

A Jeep without a roll bar is like a root beer float without the ice cream.
    something's missing...

MBs look right without a roll bar.

CJs, esp. from the '70s, just look naked without a roll bar.

Without a rollbar, I would not be here to respond to your post.

Please use the roll bar! In my first Jeep ('67 CJ5 ) I was stopped for a school bus and got rear ended by single axle dump truck going 30 mph. that roll bar kept him from making contact with the drivers seat. My second Jeep ('71 CJ5) I rolled at 45 mph and three of us walked away. I know they look neat without them, but they will save you from serious injury or death. I will have to agree with pathkiller, not even to the corner store without one ( or seat belts )

It's staying on guys...I just happen to like the look of the older vehicles without roll bars. Those stories are freakin' scary though!

That '74 really looks sharp! So I assume they used two different Jeep fonts for '74?
