This is the scissors jack that came with my 72 CJ5. Is it the proper one for that year?

    Don't think so. It's aftermarket.

The factory jack is black, and operates with the lug wrench. This is better, but not factory.

Thanks for the picture Shank. I'm sure someone will post a picture of the original.

BTW I like your vintage spare. I have the same one, a Goodyear Suburbanite. Wish we could still get them.

    That was quick. Thanks.
Man, that's a funky little thing. I'll be on the lookout for one. As Tim said, the scissor type looks like it would work better.

Tim's right on the money! The pic I posted was not of mine, but is identical to the one I have in a box (somewhere) which is the OEM unit from my '71. I changed/ rotated tires back in the day when in HS using this style jack on my CJ and it's definitely better served as a resto style accessory... IMHO!

I think I'll get a scissors type and use it while I look for the original. I'll have to antique the new Jack so it looks right with my rig.

Yeah, it's old school for sure. I think they were Poly Glass? Is that right?

All the intermediates came with a scissors jack, AFAIK. Don't know the precise year when Jeep changed from the screw jack to the scissors jack, but I know that a '73 had the scissors jack, and I believe the '72s did too.

The Hein-Warner scissors jack, pictured above, can be operated with the jack way under the car, using the handle shown. The Jeep scissors jack does not have a handle, instead being run up and down by a hex bolt on the jack turned by the lug wrench. This is ok on a CJ (although sloooow), because the spring plates are close enough to the corners of the car that you can run the jack up and down without crawling under the car. For an aftermarket jack, you need the long handle to be safe in all applications.

The Hein-Warner jack pictured above is a good one - keep it.

The screw jack is the same as the Jeepster/Commando used. Parts manual listed the screw type used until 72 on CJ and Commando and the scissor used 73 and later CJ/Commando however I've never seen a Commando with a scissor jack.
